Lot 505    

[Massachusetts] 1851, From Laura Bridgeman (deaf, dumb & blind). Docketing on cover from Boston to Georgia, with original 4-page enclosure written by Miss Bridgeman using the Perkins' Howe Press adopted by the Perkins School for the Blind; some cover and enclosure wear, Fine, a remarkable letter from this prominent deafblind pioneer.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Laura Bridgman?s life and education is a legacy. In writing of her, Charles Dickens made the world understand that people who are deafblind can be educated. In 1886, Helen Keller?s parents read Dickens? account and realized for the first time that there was hope for their daughter. They contacted Perkins School for the Blind and Anne Sullivan was sent to be Helen?s teacher. Sullivan educated Helen using Samuel Gridley Howe?s methods for teaching Laura Bridgman. Helen Keller always acknowledged gratefully that she followed in the footsteps of Laura Bridgman.

Clear circular date stamp with manuscript date, on 1837 folded letter to Middleville, N.Y., manuscript "25" rate at upper left, tone spoting, F.-V.F., a very rare postmark, one of only a few known examples of this Michigan territory office during the "Toledo Strip" controversy.
