Fancy double circle postmark (Williams ELD-2920) with manuscript date at center with matching "10" rate handstamp on 1851 folded letter to Vermont, miner's letter datelined "Hangtown, Cal, Dec. 7th, 1851" which reads, "Sunday is truly a great day here. I have spent 3 Sundays in this place, on the first there was a Bull & Bear fight, the second a Circus & today there is to be a fight between a Jackass & a Grizzly Bear, also two Cock fights and a Learned Pig exhibition, and so it goes…, I tried a new or different speculation, and went and bought a share in the Ohio Mining & Tunnel Company, and paid $5.00 in money and 2.5 in work at 5 dollars per day…, If they strike the Gold rich, the shares will be first rate property.", F.-V.F., a wonderful item.
