Saucelito/June 25th /53 (Marin). Dateline on 1853 folded letter to New York, carried to San Francisco & franked with 1851 3¢ pair (right stamp with corner clipped) tied by San Francisco cds, straight line "Advertised" handstamp with manuscript "1" applied in New York, F.-V.F., a rare item as this is the earliest recorded usage of postage stamps in Marin County.

Sites, Cal., Feb 3, 1895 (Colusa). Bold purple town postmark on 2¢ entire to Santa Clara, matching target duplex canceling, with original enclosure, Extremely Fine, scarce, postmark unlisted in Williams.

(Sonora) San Francisco, Cal./Jul 25/40 (San Francisco). Integral rate cds (Williams SAF-250) on 1850 folded letter datelined "Sonora Camp, California, July 7, 1850" to Virginia, fascinating miner's letter with contents regarding voyage to the mines & conditions, "Murders are as plenty here as thefts are in the States, no less than ten in this neighborhood since I came here and only yesterday the stage express was stopped by Robbers, but they their benefit too shot dead on the spot and two taken prisoner and will be hung to a tree. These depredations are mostly committed by Mexicans, who are as thick as Americans in these mines. The people are waking up and if there is a continuation of these things, they will be driven out of the country one and all.", slight aging & edge wear, F.-V.F., a wonderful item from Sonora prior to the opening of the Post Office.

Lot 183    

Sonora, Cal. (Tuolumne). Manuscript postmark (Williams TUO-1330) on 1850 folded letter addressed to "Stand Watie, Esq. Maysville, Benton County, Arkansas" with matching manuscript "40" rate, interesting miner's letter written by his brother, John A. Watie, which tells of the hardships of the overland crossing to California & mining conditions, folded letter somewhat worn at right, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Stand Watie, was born on December 29, 1806, at Oothcaloga, Cherokee Nation, Georgia. He was to become the principal leader of the Cherokee Nation and the only Native American Confederate General during the Civil War. Watie was a proponent of the removal treaty, which ultimately forced the Cherokee out of Georgia in 1838 to Oklahoma along the "Trail of Tears", on which 4000 Cherokee died.

Sonora, Cal. (Tuolumne). Manuscript postmark (Williams TUO-1330) on Dec. 1850 folded cover with matching "12½" rate to the Comptroller of State in San Jose, interesting contents regarding mining, taxes and riots in Sonora, Very Fine, ex-Haas.
