Sonora, Cal. (Tuolumne). Straight line postmark in black (Williams TUO-1360) with manuscript date "17 May '52" on cover to Massachusetts with manuscript "Paid 6"¢ rate, cover somewhat worn & with sealed tear at left, F.-V.F., a very rare straight line marking.

Sonora, Cal. (Tuolumne). Lot of three folded covers with manuscript postmarks from the second period of usage (May 21-June 12, 1852), both the earliest and latest recorded covers being included, plus a June 10 date, rates include, 3¢, 5¢ & 6¢, Very Fine and rare, thought to be the only known cover from this period.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Lot 201    

Sonora, Cal./June (Tuolumne). Three rim postmark (Williams TUO-1380) with manuscript date "22" on blue folded cover to San Francisco franked with 1851 3¢ cancel by delicate grid of dots, letter is written on June 18, the day of the great fire which destroyed the town of Sonora and refers to the fire, "Sonora is all burnt to Hell, we saved all of our Merchandise & stock.", F.-V.F.

Sonora, Cal. /July 12 (Tuolumne). Three rim postmark (Williams TUO-1380) on 1852 folded cover to New York franked with a gorgeous four margin corner pair of the 1851 3¢ orange brown (Pos. 9-10LIE) tied by postmark & scarce segmented grid cancel, minor cover stain & couple trivial edge tears, Very Fine and choice, a wonderful cover.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Sonora, Cal./July 12 (Tuolumne). Three rim postmark (Williams TUO-1380) on 1852 folded cover to Maine franked with two 1851 3¢ orange brown tied by scarce segmented grid cancel, both stamps well margined a left stamp just touched at bottom, Very Fine and choice.

Sonora, Cal./July 29 (Tuolumne). Three rim postmark (Williams TUO-1380) on 1852 folded cover (with contents) to Postmaster in Maine with manuscript "Free", handstamped with "10" due marking in serrated circle, Very Fine and choice, Pictured in Letters of Gold.

Lot 205    

Sonora, Cal./Sept. 23 (Tuolumne). Bluish black strike three rim postmark (Williams TUO-1380) on 1852 folded cover (with contents) to Maine franked with two 1851 3¢ orange brown singles tied by matching grids, interesting miner contents relating to the political atmosphere and local unrest due to racial prejudice, "It is now said that the trouble at Vallecito was got up by the Americans as a pretense for driving the foreigners out of the diggings. After the Fracas which I mentioned in my letter to mother, a gambler was found stabbed-it was said the Mexicans did it. The foreigners had four hours given them to leave. The Americans meanwhile paraded up & down with their loaded firearms, & the poor devils had to leave their claims or sell them for a song & pack off.", the letter continues with much interesting contents such as the State Miners Convention to take measures to prevent the immigration of "Coolies (Chinese)", the formation of a vigilance committee to "warn off the Coolies & make them go", an expedition to Walker's River for mining & the miners being "armed to the teeth on account of the Indians, who are rather troublesome in that section." etc., folded letter with some small edge tears & central discoloration, Fine, a wonderful & historic letter.

Sonora, Cal. (Tuolumne). Three rim postmark (Williams TUO-1380) tying 1851 3¢ on 1852 folded cover to San Francisco with additional strike at bottom left, stamp four margins (close at bottom & couple trivial tone spots under magnification), Very Fine, a most unusual item tied by the postmark.
