Hawaii, ELC. Manuscript initials cancel tying 1864, 2¢ rose vermilion, horizontal pair on 1867 cover to Hilo, Hawaii, docketed "Rev J.D. Paris, Nov 27/67" at left, couple light cover stains, Very Fine.

Hawaii, [Hawaii] Hoopuloa. Violet town postmark (MH 255.01) in 1899, 2¢ rose, small pinhole in stamp, otherwise Fine.

Lot 1938 o   

Hawaii, [Hawaii] Paauilo. Straight line handstamp with date (Davey 610) in black, included are two singles & a pair, all with straight line handstamp, some toning, mixed condition (Rarity 1RR).
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This mark was considered a private mark for Paauilo Plantation, but the Post Office correspondence shows the mark was used as a postmark by the Paauilo office.

Hawaii, [Hawaii] Paauilo/Hawaii. Straight line handstamp (Davey 609) in black, included are two singles (one on piece) & a pair, all with straight line handstamp, one lightly toned, mixed condition, F.-V.F (Rarity 1RR).

Lot 1943    

Hawaii, [Hawaii] Volcano House. A perfect strike (Davey 612) tying 1875 2¢ brown on 1888 cover to Kohala with two strikes of violet Hilo postmarks & one Kohala arrival postmark, stamp natural s.e., trivial perf flaws & corner crease, Extremely Fine, a gorgeous item (Rarity 1R).
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Volcano House is a hotel situated on the rim of Kilauea Crater in Hawaii National Park. In 1893, the office was described as a "postal agency" as an "accommodation to tourists.".

A wonderful accumulation in one three ring binder full of singles, pairs, strips (both on and off fragments), plus some cut squares and a few covers with a wide variety of postmarks from the Island of Hawaii, towns include Hakalau, Hilo, Holualoa, Honokaa, Honomu, Honuapo, Hookena, Kailua, Kalapana, Kawaihae, Kealakekua, Keauhou, Kohala, Kukuihaele, Laupahoehoe, Mahukona, Napoopoo, Paauilo (including 3 items with rare straight line cancel), Pahala, Papaikou, Punaluu, Volcano House, Waimea, Waiohinu etc., many duplicates, most on the 1894-96 issues which have been selected for the clarity of the strikes, mixed condition, worth careful inspection, a great lot for the specialist (no photo).
