Illustrated Barnabas Bates Postage Reform Propaganda cover showing Steamship, Eagle with Shield & Steam Engine, addressed to the President of the Northern Railroad & franked with 1851 3¢ orange brown (large even margins) tied by a wonderful strike of "Northern R.R., New York" balloon postmark, hint of address ink "bleeding" due to moisture & trivial water stain on reverse, an Extremely Fine gem, ex-Bigham, Dick, Haas, Grunin.

Elaborately illustrated "Barnabas Bates" cover depicting Steamer, Train & Eagle with Shield in black franked with 1851 3¢ dull red (just clear to mostly large margins, light crease) tied by "Havanna, N.Y." cds, cover with ornate imprint of "D. Felt & Hosford, Stationers" on reverse, tiny cover tear at top just affecting ribbon, Extremely Fine.

[Propaganda] The Peace Society. All over printed Propaganda design on grey cover franked with 1851 3¢ dull red (just in at bottom right) cancelled by grid with manuscript "So. Vassalboro, Me." postmark, this scarce design was issued first issued in England and later by the American branch of the Peace Society, Very Fine, ex-Grunin, Knapp.

Phonography. All over advertising on immaculate buff cover franked with 1851 3¢ dull red (large margins to just in at bottom) tied by "Dubuque, Iowa" cds, cover with imprint of "Benn Pitman, Cincinnati, Ohio" at bottom, flap missing, Extremely Fine.

Sir Isaac Pitman, was an Englishman who invented phonographic shorthand, or phonography, a shorthand system based on phonetics. As it could be adapted to a wide variety of languages, it became one of the most widely used systems in the world. It was his brother, Benn, who popularized phonography in America.
