1851, 3¢ orange brown, First Day Cover. Large margins to just barely in at bottom, beautiful rich color and early impression, tied by blue grid cancel with matching "Philadelphia/Jul 1" (1851) circular datestamp on First Day folded letter to Elkton, Md., cover datelined "Philad July 1, 1851" & docketed on side flap "Phila July 1/51/Rec'd July 2nd", Very Fine, a wonderful First Day Cover & one of the few with clear date evidence of the usage, ex-Gibson.
Scott No. 10    Estimate $7,500 - 10,000.

The 3¢ orange brown replaced the 5¢ 1847 issue which was demonetized on July 1, 1851 when the new 3¢ postal rate took effect for letters sent up to 3,000 miles.

York" cds on ornate Valentine cover with gold floral design to Fulton, N.Y., cover forwarded to Pulaski and franked with an additional 1851 3¢ orange brown which is tied by blue "Fulton" cds, cover includes attractive "Meek" valentine enclosure, both adhesives slightly cut in, Very Fine, a lovely usage.
