Chiles (Postmaster's Name). in ribbon entwined around ornate Patriotic Shield cancel tying 1851 3¢ orange brown (mostly full margins) on 1852 cover (with original enclosure) to New Jersey postmarked with "Eutaw, Ala." cds, Extremely Fine, a stunning exhibition item and one of the most spectacular fancy cancels of the era.

1851, 3¢ orange brown, First Day Cover. Large margins to just barely in at bottom, beautiful rich color and early impression, tied by blue grid cancel with matching "Philadelphia/Jul 1" (1851) circular datestamp on First Day folded letter to Elkton, Md., cover datelined "Philad July 1, 1851" & docketed on side flap "Phila July 1/51/Rec'd July 2nd", Very Fine, a wonderful First Day Cover & one of the few with clear date evidence of the usage, ex-Gibson.

The 3¢ orange brown replaced the 5¢ 1847 issue which was demonetized on July 1, 1851 when the new 3¢ postal rate took effect for letters sent up to 3,000 miles.

Felt & Hosford, Stationers" on reverse, tiny cover tear at top just affecting ribbon, Extremely Fine.
