Central Overland California & Pike's Peak Express Co., Denver City K.T., May 4. Clear strike of oval date stamp on 1861 cover to De Kalb, Illinois, franked with 1857 3¢ dull red (s.e. at right) tied by green "St. Joseph, Mo., May 14" cds, missent and forwarded with "De Kalb, Mo., May 21" cds, with original enclosure datelined "Denver May 2, 1861", Very Fine.

Everts, Davis & Co.'s Express, Forbestown. Large blue oval date stamp on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco with black "Everts, Wilson & Co." printed frank at top left, connecting with Wells, Fargo & Co. with blue "Marysville, Jun 9" oval date stamp and two strikes of blue "Sac. Messenger" transit oval date stamps, Extremely Fine, a choice usage of this very scarce Evert, Wilson & Co. type frank, ex-Kramer.

Frey's Valentine Express. Red printed corner card cover, "With Compliments of St. Valentine" pre-address, locally addressed with blue straight line "Paid" handstamp, small bit of expert restoration at bottom, otherwise Extremely Fine, a rare San Francisco Valentine local; ex-Jessup, Pearce, Haas.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

Hunter & Co.'s Express. Blue oval handstamp on small cover addressed to Sacramento City, Cal., blue "Troy, N.Y., Jun 24" origin cds and manuscript "40" rate, red "Adv'd" handstamp applied in Sacramento before handing over to Hunter & Co. for delivery, cover missing most of backflap, Extremely Fine and rare.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Lot 18    

Jones & Russell's Pikes Peak Express Co., Denver City, May 3, 1860. Full strike of cds on cover to Ohio, entered the mails blue "Saint Joseph, Mo., May 10, 1860" cds tying 1857, 3¢ dull red, two original enclosure, one with interesting content: Doct. Stone who had a duel here during the winter and got shot…his wound is a dreadful one. A hole entirely through him made with a 1½ ounce ball from a musket., minor cover edge wear, Very Fine, a nice strike of this rare stagecoach express frank.

Overland Mail, Via Los Angeles. illustrated Railroad Propaganda cover with locomotive design on fresh yellow 1859 cover to Rockport, Ill., franked with nicely centered 10¢ green, type II tied by "San Francisco, Cal., Jun 20, 1859" cds, slightly reduced at top and missing top flap, otherwise Extremely Fine& choice, a remarkably fresh stamp and cover, ex-Sevenoaks.

"Per Overland Mail Via Los Angeles". illustrated four-horse stagecoach design with Geo. H. Bell imprint below, on fresh buff cover to North Hanson, Mass., franked with 1857, 10¢ green, type V tied by grid cancel and "San Francisco, Cal., Aug, 1860" cds, Extremely Fine and choice, a lovely overland mail usage; with 2004 P.F. certificate.

Pony Express, Silver City - March 7th/61. Manuscript origin endorsement on 1853, 10¢ Nesbitt entire to Nantick, Mass., with manuscript "$2.50" pony express rate and "Via Carson City - U.T., Mch 7/61" routing, additionally canceled by green grid and entering the mails with matching "Saint Joseph, Mo., Mar 21" cds, Wells, Fargo & Co. red printed frank at top, minor cover edge wear expertly restored, Very Fine, a wonderful east bound transcontinental Pony Express Way usage, the only second period pony express usage originating from Silver City, Utah Territory (Nevada), from a new find and unlisted in the Frajola, Kramer & Walske The Pony Express census.

Reynolds & Co.'s Express. Clear strike of small oval "Forwarded by" handstamp frank on cover to Stockton, Cal., blue "Danville, Vt., Nov 12" origin cds and manuscript "40" rate at top, Very Fine, a very scarce express handstamp from this short-lived express operating from Sacramento and Stockton to the southern mines in 1850-51.
Estimate    $500 - 750.
