Hawaii, 1843 Wailuku Female Academy letter sheet. Printed illustrated wood block view of the seminary, with each building hand numbered and matching legend at bottom of sheet, with printed catalog below containing a list of the faculty and students; from the academy principle and printer of the sheet, missionary Rev. Edward Bailey, addressed to Daniel Wright Jr. in North Situate, Mass., letter datelined "Wailuku, Maui, Mar 27, 1843" with lengthy 3-page letter describing his missionary and school work, also directly mentioning the lettersheet: The last two year I have been teacher of this Sem. of which this sheet contains a Catalogue. The cut is a correct representation, so for as position & dimensions are concerned of the school buildings., cover with red "Boston, Mass., Sep 25" cds and "Ship" straight line handstamp, manuscript "8" rate, forwarded from Natick and re-rated; letter with some fold splitting and trivial cover tear not affecting the printed lettersheet, Very Fine, a magnificent and extremely rare early Hawaiian illustrated lettersheet of which only a few are known, this being finest example sent by the director of the seminary.

Hawaii, 1881 Golden Wedding invitation. Bronze printed invitation for Mr. & Mrs. W.P. Alexander in Haiku, Maui, with a original unaddressed cover with belt buckle embossed backflap, docketed by Rev. S.E. Bishop, Very Fine.

Two invitations (celebration moved due to untimely death) for Rev. & Mrs. Lowell Smith in Nuuanu Valley, Honolulu, with original hand delivered cover to Rev. S.E. Bishop & Family, with 35 page memorial pamphlet for the celebration, some light toning, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Lot 2303    

Hawaii, 1898 Camp Mc Kinley Soldier's correspondence. 18 letters written from August 25th to November 28th from Charles E. Smith, soldier in the 1st Albany regiment stationed in Honolulu, with original covers, all but one cover (unfranked "Soldier's Letter" endorsed cover with U.S. dues) franked with 1894, 2¢ brown and addressed to wife in Albany, N.Y., with additional registered cover franked with single 1894, 12¢ blue; all lengthy letters accounting his time in Honolulu while awaiting his discharge, interesting content throughout regarding troop movements to Manila through Honolulu, inflated cost of goods, moving the regiment to the other side of Diamond Head (due to poor camp conditions and an outbreak of typhoid fever), the sudden and recent death of one of this comrades due to typhoid fever, having Thanksgiving dinner hosted by the Ladies of Honolulu, etc., with last letter confirming his soon to discharge and return to the states; 3 covers with YMCA corner cards and matching letterhead enclosures, a Red Cross handstamped cover and many Catholic Truth Society (San Francisco Presidio) letterheads, some additional items including a photograph of Charles Smith in uniform (of which his mention several times trying to get taken before leaving Hawaii), Very Fine overall, a wonderful correspondence from soldier in Honolulu during the Spanish American war.

Hawaii, Bethel Union Church Constitution, Honolulu. 4 pamphlets; includes two 11-page 1884 Constitution and By-Laws, a 1885 revised edition and a 59-page 1885 charter manual with a list of members updated by hand to 1887, light tone spots and some wear, F.-V.F.

Hawaii, Juliette Montague Cooke, 1812-1896. 31 page memorial pamphlet including tributes, memories of Mrs. J.M. Cooke in the young Chief's School and resolutions passed by the Women's Board, very minor cover stains, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Juliette Montaque Cooke arrived in Honolulu in 1837 and with her husband, Amos Starr Cooke taught school children and eventually set up a school and taught the children of Hawaiian royalty.
