Jones & Russell's Pikes Peak Express Co., Denver City. Circular express postmark without date, on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Albion, Mich., entered the mails with "Leavenworth, K.T., Jul 31, 1859" cds; cover reduction at left just into rim of express postmark professionally restored, Very Fine appearance, still an attractive example of the earliest known usage of this express company handstamp.

Lot 315    

Jones & Russell's Pike's Peak/Express Co/Denver City. Wonderful strike of Sep 22, 1859 company handstamp on white cover to Hudson River Rail Road, New York, franked by big straddle copy of 1857 3¢ dull red (small fault) tied by "Leavenworth City, K.T./Oct. 1, 1859" cds, part of back flap gone & top edge of cover expertly added, Extremely Fine appearance, a rare cover.

Kennedy, Long & Co.'s Express and Transfer Co. Blue boxed frank on 1864-65 3¢ entire to San Francisco, bit reduced at left affecting frank, manuscript "K" at bottom left, Fine and scarce, this small express carried mail along the coast between San Francisco and Pescadero.

La Porte Express Co. Printed frank (Haller FL4) on 3¢ Pink entire (U59) to San Francisco, clearly struck blue "La Porte Express Co. La Porte May 2" oval datestamp, conjunctive use with ""Wells, Fargo & Co. Marysville May 3"" oval datestamp, trivial sealed edge tear at lower left, otherwise Very Fine, ex-Kramer (who paid $775 in 1985).

La Porte Express Co. Printed frank (Haller FL4) on 3¢ Pink entire (U58), two strikes of blue "La Porte Express Co. La Porte Aug. 7" oval datestamp, paste-up usage with cover addressed to Oroville (piece torn from left side), fresh and Very Fine, this express ran between La Porte to the Gibsonville mines circa 1863-65, ex-Edwards.

Lamping & Co. Express. Printed frank (Haller FL1, Ty. 1) on 3¢ Pink entire (U58) to Sacramento, "Lamping & Co. Express Crest. City" (Crescent City) oval handstamp, no other markings, carried exclusively by Lamping, Very Fine, a scarce usage.

Oval handstamp on 1864-65 3¢ Nesbitt entire with black company frank to San Francisco, carried to Marysville, where Wells, Fargo & Co. took over transmission of the cover to San Francisco & applied their blue oval handstamp of Marysville, small 3mm tear at top affecting frank, Very Fine, premium strike of this usually average strike of Lamping.

Lamping & Co. Express/Downieville. Oval handstamp on 1864-65 3¢ entire to San Francisco with ornate Company frank at left, used in conjuction with Wells, Fargo & Co. with their blue double oval handstamp of Marysville, flap tear which extends to front at top, Very Fine and scarce, Lamping's Express (successor to Langton) served the Downieville mining region and connected with Wells, Fargo & Co. at Marysville, a variety of franks were produced.

Langton's & Bro.'s Express, Forrest City. Red oval handstamp on backflap of cover to Ohio, front franked with 1851, 10¢ green, type II (tiny tear, removed and placed back improperly), blue waffle grid canceling with matching "Marysville, Cal., Jan 14, Paid By Stamps" cds, cover edge wear and staining at upper left, Fine, a very scarce express handstamp; with 2006 P.F. certificate.
