Lot 132    

Sacramento, Cal., Nov 10, 1849 (Pre-Statehood) (Sacramento). Two line postmark (Williams SAC-2470) on stampless folded letter with small matching "Paid 40" rate handstamp to Erie, Pa., sensibly reinforced with several small stains one leading to small hole on face, Fine, a great classic rarity, this is the latest of the 5 or so copies used during the period of Oct 21st thru Nov 10th, 1849.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

Salsig (Mendocino County). Manuscript postmark (Williams MEN-3450) on July 8, 1912 post card of Greenwood Harbor, franked with 2¢ red to Munich, Germany, crisis postmark, postmaster probably lost cancel or had a fire as earlier postmarks exist, only two recorded, Very Fine.

San Andreas, Cal. (Calaveras). Straight line postmark (Williams CAL-2420) with manuscript date "Sep. 4" on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Yuba City, Cal., a light but all letters readable strike in a new variant on William CAL-2420 without the month printed, small stain at left, F.-V.F., quite rare.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

San Francisco, Cal. (San Francisco). Clear strike of straightline handstamp with manuscript "June 20" date and "40" rate on cover to New York, with original contents dated 1849, sender's instructions "via Panama pr. 'California'", flap tear, Extremely Fine and choice, desirable example of the scarce San Francisco straightline, the first handstamp used at the San Francisco post office, ex-Haas.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Red cds on 1850 folded cover with fancy "Ship 6" clamshell marking in red dated Feb 10 on folded letter from Victoria, Australia dated Dec 9, 1850, minor oily spots, also a 2nd folded cover with the clamshell marking in black with filing crease thru it dated Jul 2, 1860, Very Fine, a scarce example of the early red clamshell marking.

Two strikes of cds tying horizontal strip of three from Plate 1 Early of 1851 1¢ blue type II + 3¢ dull red on 1852 folded letter to New York, stamps with few faults from placement near edge of cover, otherwise Fine, a very scarce franking paying the transcontinental rate.
