Great Britain, 1788 Wellington, England to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Brownish black circular "Post Paid" handstamp on 1788 folded cover with manuscript "1.8" dwt. U.S. inland due, red manuscript shillings paid in the middle, partial reddish brown JUN 4 British cds on the reverse, Very Fine.

Great Britain, 1841 Liverpool, England to New York, N.Y. Folded letter with manuscript "pr Columbia via Halifax" routing instruction, red octagonal "Paid At Liverpool Oc 5 1841" handstamp & red manuscript "4/", red "Boston Ms. Ship Oct 21" transit cds and manuscript "1 3/4oz. 1,33 ¼" cents due, while this weighed between 1-2 oz., it was considered a quadruple rate, Very Fine.

Red octagonal "Paid At Liverpool, 1844 No 19" handstamp upper middle, with corresponding "1/" handstamp rate and blue handstamp "20?" cents due intertwined, the "20?" cents due rate marking is unlisted (Boston Postmarks to 1890, M. Blake & W. Davis), Extremely Fine and choice.

Great Britain, 1844 Liverpool, England to New York, N.Y. Partial orange octagonal three line handstamp "Paid At Liverpool" in the upper right corner of "Account of Sales, Imports, &c., of Cotton" headed "Liverpool, Friday, 2nd August, 1844." folded letter sheet, red manuscript "6/" rate, manuscript "2 1/2 oz." and "189 1/2" U.S. rate, 6sh rate represented the one shilling rate to the U.S. for over 2 ounces, but not over 3 ounces, U.S. charged 2 cents incoming ship, plus 10 rates based on 4 rates per ounce of the 18 3/4 cents zone rate for between 150-400 miles for 2½ oz., Very Fine.

Great Britain, 1845 Liverpool, England to New York, N.Y. Folded letter with manuscript "pr Liverpool Sr of 4th Decbr." routing instruction on the top with a red framed "Paid At Liverpool 1845 De 4" handstamp, red handstamp "1/" mark indicating the rate paid, blue manuscript "7" with pencil "2" carrier fee added just beneath summed to "9", F.-V.F., incoming letters exhibiting the 2¢ to the mails carrier fee are scarce, particularly during this time frame.

Great Britain, 1846-99 Great Britain to the United States. Lot of 54 incoming covers with classic frankings, postmarks & destinations, several are to New York, included is three stampless covers (one of which is from 1854 to the small town of Georgetown, El Dorado County in the Gold Country with San Francisco "Paid" handstamp), several interesting & better franking are present including one cover with strip of 3 of S.G. #62, plus several single franking of the 1sh Surface Print, mixed condition, worth careful inspection.

Great Britain, 1847 Liverpool to Red Hook, N.Y. Attractive folded cover franked with 1847 1sh horiz. pair (large margins, left stamp small corner crease) tied by barred numeral "131" cancels with blue Liverpool backstamp, markings include red "Boston Mass Nov 1" receiving cds & matching numeral "7" handstamp corrected to "12" with blue manuscript "22" above, Very Fine.
Scott No. 5    Estimate $300 - 400.

This franking of 2 shillings paid the correct 1 shilling per half ounce rate for up to an ounce. Originally rated in the United States as a single under 300 miles inland (2 cents ship plus 5 cents), then changed to a single over 300 miles (2 cents ship plus 10 cents), and finally corrected to a double over 300 miles (2 cents ship plus 20 cents). Carried by Cunard Line steamer "Caledonia", depart LP 19-Oct, arriving Boston 5-Nov.

Great Britain, 1848 Liverpool, England to New York, N.Y. Folded cover franked with three 1841 1d red + 1847 1sh (top left corner missing & top right partially separated) tied by numeral "466" in oval grid with large red "7" handstamp adjacent, backstamped "Liverpool" postmark, endorsed manuscript "Caledonia …. " routing instructions in upper left corner, Very Fine.
Scott No. 3+5    Estimate $200 - 300.

This franking pays the 1/ per half ounce contract packet rate to the U.S. plus 3d late fee. The late fee for Liverpool was on an experimental basis and charged 1d for 15 minutes after the time of clearing the letter box and 3d after 15 minutes up to 10 minutes prior to the time of dispatch from sometime in 1847 to 1 March 1849 when this rate was put into effect in several towns. The U.S. rate of 7c due represents 2c ship and Sc half ounce zone rate for under 300 miles. Per Cunard Line steamer Caledonia, departing Liverpool 12/03, arriving Boston 27 March. Very fine example of an early experimental late fee.
