Confederacy, Chester C.H., S.C., Sept 20, 1862, double circle postmark tying 1861, 10¢ light milky blue Paterson printing (just touched at left) on turned cover to "Equality P. Office, Anderson Dst. So Ca.", missent to Anderson C.H., S.C. where canceled with town cds and redirected to proper destination with manuscript "10 ford" which has been crossed out; turned cover with inside handcarried use to Chester C.H., Very Fine.

Confederacy, Chester C.H., S.C., blue double circle postmarks tying 1862, 5¢ blue (two pairs, one horizontal & one vertical) on small pink lined commercial cover, adhesives with mostly large margins, restored piece at top not affecting stamps, F.-V.F.

Confederacy, Chester C.H., S.C., June 27, 1862, neat double circle cancel tying 1861, 5¢ blue single (just touched) on fresh cover addressed to W.H. Gist, the governor who signed the Ordinance of Secession on December 20, 1860 but left office the same day, Very Fine, a nice usage shortly before the rate change.

Lot 3231    

Confederacy, Columbia, S.C., autographed letter signed from (General) Wade Hampton dated June 25th 1861 to Col. Manigault with incredible historic content. Gen. Hampton states, "I find it impossible to procure pistols for my cavalry and if your board can furnish the old dragoon percussion pistols to my men you will oblige me very much. I shall need about 250 pcs. Capt Butler tells me that the Gov(ernment) has given him an order for pistols. Can any holsters be had in the city? My troop goes tomorrow & the last on Saturday so if you can let me have any pistols I hope you will send them at once. Did you send any sitz(?) sabres? I hear that no arms can be had in Richmond. I beg to thank you for the very efficient aid you have given to the Legion for I am well aware that without the assistance of your Board no arms would have been give to me. I expect to take on the last detachment on Monday. I am Yrs Very Truly Wade Hampton"., Extremely Fine, An awesome & historic signed Confederate military document.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

The letter was written at the time when Hampton was a Colonel. He was one of only two officers (the other being Nathan Bedford Forrest) to achieve the rank of lieutenant general in the cavalry service of the Confederacy.
