Louisville & Cincinnati Mail Line. 3 different on cover; large cds tying four margin 1851, 3¢ dull red on 1852 folded letter sheet (file fold affecting stamp), large type cds with integral "5" on 1853 cover and small abbreviated on 1853 folded letter datelined "On board U.S. mail boat" with "5" rate handstamp, all Very Fine strikes.

Per Cars. Manuscript endorsement on 1839 cover to Taunton, Mass., endorsed on reverse "The Conductor of the Car is requested to take this to Mr. B. immediately", Very Fine, an interesting early railroad "express" usage, before organized expresses operated, railroad conductors were entrusted with letters and small packages to be delivered along the route, William F. Harden, the father of Express Companies. was a conductor on an early Boston railroad.

1740's Incoming Boston Ship Letter. Folded letter sheet probably London, addressed to Quaker merchant John Reynell in Philadelphia, manuscript "BSh 14.16" Boston Ship postmark and double the 7.16 dwt gr. rate applied upon arrival and routed the letter to Philadelphia, "Via Boston" routing endorsement to denote sending it by a private ship's captain; some edge nicks at top right, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

1744 Incoming Boston Ship Cover from London. With manuscript "BSh 21.16 dwt." (Boston Ship) for triple 7.16 dwt. gr. rate applied upon arrival, addressed to "John Kinsey, Esq., Chief Justice (formerly Speaker of the House of Representatives) of the Province of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia", manuscript "via Boston" routing endorsement at bottom left, addressee denotes the sender as "From Richard Partridge, London 1st the 8th 1744" with common Quaker dating was to date the current and anticipatory next year, Partridge was the London, England agent of the Pennsylvania Assembly of Quakers and was a close associate of Benjamin Franklin, Very Fine and choice, a wonderful triple rate usage which may be unique.
