(Gahagan & Howe) City Letter Deliver, S.E. Corner, Sansome & Western Sts. Clear blue oval handstamp on buff envelope to local delivery, with original invitation of a gentle to a young lady, Very Fine, rare this nice.

(Gahagan & Howe) City, G. & H. Express, 423 Washn. St. S.E. Cor., Sansome St. Sharp bold blue oval handstamp on white stampless envelope for local San Francisco delivery, Extremely Fine, very rare, pictured in Nathan.

Lot 1474    

Garland's Express., Paid. In double lined printed rectangle on 1864 3¢ pink entire to Quincy, Cal., from one of the surrounding mining camps, original letter (not now with cover) is noted as March 25, 1865; stain at lower left, otherwise Very Fine, a unique usage from this express.
Estimate    $2,500 - 3,500.

Though in business for several years he apparently didn't used franked covers except in the beginning and then didn't cancel them. Ran from Quincy to various mining areas in Plumas County.

Wm. T. Gibbs, Express, Paid. Bold black double oval handstamp with Gibb's circular "Spanish Flat, Cal." handstamp origination mark (same as William ELD-3780 but without the date), also with Wells Fargo blue oval Placerville handstamp (Leutzinger type 3-1) on 1853 3¢ red entire to San Francisco, Cal.; nick off lower left corner, Very Fine.

Gillpatrick's Express. Underlined printed frank on 1870 3¢ green entire to Jackson, Cal., San Francisco postmark where Gillpatrick dropped it at the end of there route; slightly trimmed at left, Very Fine, Gillpatrick ran an express from San Francisco on a local steamer to points along the upper bay and a few spots inland, use copies are very rare.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Greathouse & Slicer Express, Yreka. Bold black oval handstamp on Wells Fargo franked (Haller type E) 1853 3¢ red entire to Weaverville, Cal.; cover nick at left, Very Fine, three known of this mark, one is in the Wiltsee Collection.

Green's Express. Light readable red oval handstamp on 1853 6¢ green entire to Plymouth Hollow, Conn., entering the mails with "Nevada City, Cal., 5, Jun 23" integral rate cds (Williams NEV-1200), Very Fine, a very rare express, with four examples record, two of which are in the Wiltsee collection.
