Confederacy, Southern Express Co./Montgomery, Ala./Nov. 29. Blue double circle handstamp on 1861 cover franked with 1861 5¢ olive green, horiz. pair (four large margins) tied by partial strike of black "Southern Express Co." handstamp & blue "Montgomery, Ala./Dec. 2" cds, addressed to "Col. Lomax, 3rd Regt. Ala. Volunteers, Norfolk, Virginia", small margin tear (not mentioned on accompanying 2000 P.S.E. cert.), Extremely Fine, ex-Hall, Shenfield, illustrated in the Walske, Trepel Book.

An extremely rare express usage with Confederate postage prepaid, carried outside the mails to Colonel Lomax's regiment in proximity to Norfolk. The blue circle tying pair is not recorded and evidently pre-dates the smaller circular handstamp found on other covers from this correspondence.

Red double circle handstamp tying manuscript cancelled 1861 5¢ dark green (deep color, margins to just touching design) on cover to Macon, Ga., Very Fine, a striking cover & a very rare usage from Savannah, ex-Brown; with 1976 P.F. certificate.

Buff cover addressed to Vicksburg, Miss. & franked with two 1862 5¢ blue (both with four margins), cancelled by blue manuscript crayon with matching "Pd - CHP" manuscript endorsement of Charles H. Phelps, the Southern Express agent in Augusta, Extremely Fine and rare, a lovely cover.
