Provisional handstamp on yellow cover to Norfolk, Va., 1861, 5¢ green affixed over handstamp and tied by "Atlanta, Ga., Dec 28, 1861" cds, manuscript "Due 5"; stamp (tiny margin tears) lifted and hinged at right to show provisional handstamp, Very Fine; with 1999 P.S.E. certificate.

Confederacy, Dalton, Ga., 1861, 5¢ black. Used as a canceling handstamp tying 1861, 5¢ green, horizontal pair on cover to Richmond, Va., matching "Dalton, Ga., Nov 27, 1861" at left; small stamp and cover defects at top, Very Fine, one of the great covers of the collection.

Confederacy, Danville, Va., 1861, 5¢ black on yellow entire. used with 1861 5¢ green, Stone 2 affixed over typographed legend "Southern/Confederacy/Danville, Va./Paid/W. B. Payne, P.M./5" ("Southern" curved) and tied by blue "Danville Va. Jan. 30" (1862) cds on cover to Flat River P.O. N.C., sender's routing "Via Greensboro, Hillsboro", the entire is fresh and immaculate, Extremely Fine.

There are approximately 20 known examples of the Danville provisional (19 listed in Crown book). This cover from the Manguin correspondence is a late use (Jan. 1862) of the provisional entire with the 5¢ General Issue added to prepay the 5¢ rate from Danville to Flat River - the distance between offices being well under 100 miles.

A remarkably beautiful example of the rare Danville Typographed Provisional.

Co." cameo corner card on backflap, to Richmond, Va., franked with 1861, 5¢ green affixed over handstamp and tied by blue "Danville, Va., Jan 11" cds; stamp lifted and hinged at left to show handstamp, cover slightly reduced & some discoloration spots, Very Fine, a very scarce usage of a regular issue over a Postmasters' Provisional.

Confederacy, Memphis, Tenn., 1861, 5¢ red on amber. Entire to Arnaudville, La. uprated with 1861, 5¢ green with both tied by "Memphis, Ten., Nov 20" cds; slight reduction at right, Very Fine.

As first government stamps appeared on October 16, 1861 the use of the provisional stamps was gradually discontinued but were still legal for postage. Rarely are they seen in combination for postage.

An extremely rare provisional and regular issue conjunctive usage, which is the only known combination of a Memphis Tenn. provisional and Government issue. One of the Philatelic Treasures of the Confederate States.

Confederacy, Savannah, Ga., 1861, 5¢ black. horiz. pair 1862, 5¢ blue used over Savannah Provisional Postmasters' Provisional handstamp, tied by "Savannah, Geo./May 21/Paid" (1862) cds on United States 3¢ Nesbitt entire with Savannah Postmasters' Provisional "5" rate handstamp which has been obliterated by grid cancels underneath the adhesive pair, entire addressed to "Alexander Stephens, Vice Prest. Confederate States, Richmond, Va.", pair, large margins to just in, flap replaced & some repairs at top, Fine.
