Lot 2969    

Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ blue, Largest Known Franking. Two pairs, a strip of 3 & an irregular strip of 4, all manuscript cancelled and affixed on an enameled box lid wrapped in blue ledger paper and addressed to Charlotte, N.C. with "Statesville, N.C." cds at bottom left, the box contained a hand sewn Valentine made of thread and Dried Flowers, all stamps have large margins except two which have small nicks, two stamps with trivial scuff, Very Fine.

A stunning Exhibition item, which is in remarkable condition given the size of the piece.

Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ blue. Two singles in different shades, small faults, tied by "Richmond, Va./Jul. 15, 1862" cds on cover addressed to "Asst. Surgeon C.M. Mofit, C.S. Steamer Arkansas, C.S. Navy, Vicksburg, Miss.", cover forwarded to Vicksburg, & endorsed "Free" by the Postmaster, knowing she had already left Yazoo City, part of flap torn away & unnoticeable tear at left, Very Fine, a wonderful cover addressed to the of the most historic Naval Vessel to sail American Waters!

Horiz. pair, large margins with bright fresh color, cancelled by indistinct cork on turned cover with "Marshall, Tex./Nov. 4, 1862" double circle postmark at left, addressed to "Col. Randall's Regiment/Little Rock, Arkansas", inside usage addressed to Marshall, Tex. & franked with United States 1857 1¢ type V tied by blue grid, Very Fine, a lovely and very rare combination, particularly used from Texas; with 1980 P.F. certificate.

Tied by "Port Republic, Va./ Jul. 9" (1862) cds on small cover to Locust Bottom, Va. with 2nd strike of cds alongside, both adhesives are large even margins except 5¢ green just touched design at bottom left, flap replaced, Extremely Fine and choice, a stunning combination; with 1975 C.S.A. certificate.

Vert. pair, large margins to close at bottom left, hint of corner crease at bottom right, tied by manuscript "Nanafalia, Ala./Jul. 30" postmark paying the forwarding postage to Dayton, Ala., cover originated from Chattanooga franked with 1861-62 10¢ blue top margin single (tiny gum soaks), tied by perfect strike of "Chattanooga, Ten./Jul 3, 1862" cds, Very Fine, a very rare combination.

Large margins, except touched at bottom & small nick at top right, tied by "Tupelo, Miss./Jul. 1, 1862" cds on turned cover to Oxford, Miss. with "Due 5" handstamp to make up the deficient postage as this was the first day of the new 10¢ rate, inside use franked with additional 5¢ blue (defective) tied by Oxford, Miss. cds to Tupelo, Very Fine, ex-Myerson.

Two singles, left stamp being Stone 3 and right Stone 2, tied by grid cancels on small cover to Richmond with "Farmville, Va./Jul. 2, 1862" cds at left, stamps well margined except Stone 3 touched at bottom, Very Fine and choice, a nice combination to the two different Stones.
