Lot 3144

Confederacy, Confederate States of America, War Department. Imprint (Dietz type II) on legal size cover to Major Genl. T.J. (Stonewall) Jackson in Winchester, Va., franked with 1861, 5¢ green tied by "Richmond, Va., Oct 24" (1861) cds; cover with some docketing in Jackson's own hand, cover edge wear and small tears at top, Fine; with 1990 C.S.A. certificate.
Scott No. 1    Estimate $3,000 - 4,000.

While the handwriting is difficult to fully decipher, the docketing appears to read "Letter respecting Petersburg (crossed out) declining to commemorative to commission Alfred Jackson". It is uncertain which Alfred Jackson this refers to, although a logical guess would be Alfred E. Jackson who later became a Brig. General. One source also indicates that he may have been a cousin. Jackson autograph material is extremely rare and popular because he died May 10, 1863 thus no post-war autographs exist as they did with many famous Civil War heros. He also lives in legend because he was a spectacular leader and died in tragic circumstances, a victim of friendly fire from his own troops. He was struck by three bullets, which results in his arm being amputated at a field hospital and died a week later from his wounds. There are many who speculate a different outcome for the war had this brilliant leader lived to command to the end. A rare opportunity to acquire this piece of Civil War history.
