(Amador) Drytown Cal, Sept 17. Manuscript postmark on cover to Massachusetts franked with 1851 3¢ dull red vertical margin pair (large margins including sheet margin at left, light vert. crease) with "X" pen cancels, tied by "Due 4" manuscript marking (due 4¢ to make up the 10¢ transcontinental rate after April 1, 1855), Very Fine and scarce.

Lot 42    

(Amador) Fiddletown, Cal., Apr 11. Balloon cds on 1870 French direct mail cover to Selongey, France, franked with 1867 Grilled 10¢ green and 1869 6¢ ultramarine with matching cut diamond fancy cancels, the 10¢ adhesive also tied by the cds, treated in New York as prepaid to the port of entry with red exchange cds showing no credit (10¢ blanket ship rate, non-treaty period January 1, 1870, until August 1, 1874), blue "Cherbourg" entry postmark with black "8" decimes due handstamp, two transit postmarks (one with year date) and Selongey May 2 receiving postmark on the back, small repair at top and top backflap mostly missing, Very Fine and visually striking, ex-Myerson.

The 6¢ stamp on this cover became detached sometime in the past and has been reaffixed slightly askew from its original position. The stamp is nearly detached again. The stamp could be carefully lifted and reattached back in its correct position.

(Amador) Jackson, Cal., Nov 10. Cds ties 1861 10¢ green horizontal strip of three (couple small defects) with additional pen stroke cancels on Prussian closed mail cover to Germany, red "N. York. Am. Pkt." and red "Aachen" exchange markings, Frankfurt Dec 18 transit postmark on the back, small corner nick at lower left, Very Fine and attractive.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Lot 44    

(Butte) Forbestown, Cal. Manuscript postmark on 1854 buff cover to Wisconsin with matching "Paid 6" manuscript rate, cover with original enclosure with excellent contents regarding Indian Fight, "We expected a treat the other day in the way of an Indian fight on our flat. The parties met & after a great deal of bravado on both sides, one of the parties backed out & withdrew from the field. There mode of warfare is different from the eastern Indians. They select open grounds and fight with a good deal of system. One of the principal maneuvers is out flanking their enemy.", letter also has mining content including a hand drawn map showing the mining area including "New York Flat", "Odd Fellows Ravine", "Dry Ravine", "Road to Forbestown from Marysville", "My own little home" and "Where the $500 Nugget was taken out", etc., part of flap torn away, Very Fine and choice.

(Butte) Forbestown, Cal. Rimless fancy arced postmark with "Mar 1" manuscript date and "Paid 10" manuscript rate on cover to New York, "1856" docket in pencil, top backflap partly missing, Very Fine and choice; one of the finest known examples.

(Butte) Forbestown, Cal., Jan 12. Red balloon cds on 1861 cover to Massachusetts franked with 1857 5¢ brown type II pair (bright color, s.e. at right on second stamp) with pen cancels, with original letter with personal content, Extremely Fine and attractive, a very rare usage of the 5¢ 1857 Issue used in California.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

(Calaveras) Jenny Lind, Cal, Aug 7. Cds on 1866 cover to England franked with 1861 10¢ green strip of three (s.e. at right, perfs trimmed off top of second & third stamps) tied by target cancels, "Prepaid" manuscript notation, red "New-York Am Pkt., 3, Sep 1" and red London exchange markings, Halstead Sep 14 receiving postmark (with year date) on the back, small portion of top backflap missing & couple small edge tears, Very Fine and attractive, the 24¢ rate to England is overpaid by 6¢ after July 1, 1863, ex-Myerson; signed Ashbrook with his analysis.

(Calaveras) Northbranch, Cal. Large rimless postmark with "Oct 30th" manuscript date on 1853-55 6¢ Nesbitt entire to Rural Retreat, Virginia with "X" pen cancel on the indicium, Very Fine and choice, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 303).

(Calaveras) San Andreas (Cal) June. straight line postmark with "21st" manuscript day date and "Paid 3" manuscript rate marking on cover to Oakland, Extremely Fine and choice, undoubtedly the finest example of this rare California straight line postmark, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 236).
