Lot 132    

"The Grizley". Embossed red cameo design on cover franked with 1851 3¢ dull red with pen cancels, postmarked red "Goodyears Bar, Cal, Feb 6" cds addressed to Sacramento, minor deterioration at upper left & slightly reduced at right, F.-V.F., thought to be the only known example.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Cover illustrated in Coburn's "Letters of Gold" (page 232). The grizzly bear is the official California state animal and is featured on the California State Flag, which was adopted in 1911. The grizzly bear first appeared on the banner raised over Sonoma during the Bear Flag Revolt against Mexican rule in June of 1846. The original Bear Flag was lost in the fire that followed the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

"I Got Most Enough". Illustrated miner's design depicting Miner Panning Gold on cover to Indiana franked with 1851 1¢ blue, type IV + 3¢ dull red, strip of 3 (all virtually four full margins) cancelled by "Santa Clara, Cal." postmark, cover show slogan tablet crossed out & at bottom "Noisy Carrier, 77 Long Wharf, San Francisco" & "Anthony & Baker SC" imprints, part of flap missing, small tear at left, Very Fine and attractive.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Illustrated Miner Lettersheet. published by Quirot of San Francisco with four panel design showing different Mining Scenes, lettersheet used with lengthy letter with hand written captions on each of the four Mining panels, included is the original cover with "Mariposa, Cal." manuscript postmark & matching "10" rate to Vermont, the letter is full of interesting contents with detailed description of voyage from New York to Chagres, across the Isthmus and the steamer to San Francisco, letter with details of life in California with accounts of Mining, Revolver & Knife purchase, plus much more, Very Fine, a great rarity of which this is the first used example with original envelope we have ever handled.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Illustrated miner's design depicting Miner Panning for Gold with Long Tom in Background on cover to Ohio with "Campo Seco, Cal." manuscript postmark with straight line "Paid" handstamp & manuscript "6" rate, cover with imprint "J.M. Hutchings' California Envelope" at left, "Anthony & Baker SC" engraver's imprint at bottom right of design, light corner wear, Very Fine and rare.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

According to Kutz (Gold Fever, pg. 62): "The early miners formed syndicates and worked as a group using 'Long Toms' to extract the gold. In essence it was an elongated sluice box with riffles or sacking in the bottom to catch the gold. A continuous current of water washed the gravel through the Long Tom, leaving the contained gold behind.".

Illustrated miners envelope to Westfield, Massachusetts franked with 1851 3¢ dull red pair with manuscript doodles, postmarked "Michigan Bluff, Cal., Mar 18" large double-lined cds, Miner's design with "Wide West Office, San Francisco" at left, stains and repaired at top with paper cut from the top backflap, which is now missing, Fine, a rare design.

Blue illustrated cameo design on cover with to Illinois franked with manuscript cancelled 1857 1¢ blue type V two singles + 3¢ dull red type II (assumed) and 5¢ brown type I (all with scissor, most perfs missing) postmarked "Oregon House (Cal.), June 10" manuscript postmark, "Due 10" straight line handstamp ties the 3¢ and 5¢ adhesives, cover strengthened with paper inside, some edge restoration, handsome Very Fine appearance, a stunning Western Illustrated Cover, ex-Knapp, Wiltsee, Polland.
