Confederacy, 1862, 10¢ deep rose. Slightly irregular margin at top, huge margins on other three sides, lightly creased, tied by bold "Richmond, Va./May 4, 1862" cds (Powell type 3a) on small embossed ladies cover to Greensburg, La., Very Fine and attractive; with 2005 C.S.A. certificate.

Lot 1504    

Confederacy, 1862, 10¢ rose. Large margins including top sheet margin, affixed over type III Jackson, Miss. "DUE/10" handstamp and tied by a" Jackson, Miss." cds on a U.S. 3¢ Star Die entire which had previously been postmarked by two strikes of the same Jul 28 Jackson cds; the cover was then sent on to Leut. C.E. Hooker, Comp A Withers Artillery, Vicksburg, Miss; edge faults and sealed tear at top, Fine; with 2008 C.S.A. certificate.

From May 26 until July 27, 1862, Lt. Hooker and the Wither's Light Artillery helped successfully defend Vicksburg against an attempt by the Union Navy to capture the city. Vicksburg finally fell to troops commanded by U.S. Grant in July of the following year.
