(Used from Japan) 1863, 2¢ black, Horizontal Pair and Three Singles. Top left stamp left margin gutterline s.e., each stamp canceled by Yokohama "X" handstamp on 1868 folded letter to Boston, Mass., one tying to cover at upper left, blurry red "China & Japan Steam Service" oval handstamp and "San Francisco, Cal., May 19" transit cds, Very Fine, a remarkable usage from the United States Post Office in Yokohama fully paying the 10¢ American Packet rate via San Francisco by the 2¢ Blackjack issue, ex Rorke; with 1978 P.F. certificate.

Lot 2081    

1867, 2¢ black, F. Grill. Complete left full pane of 100 with plate "No. 30" and "National Bank Note Company" imprint at bottom with imprints at left and top, gutter margin at right, full original gum, mixed centering as usual with many nicely centered throughout, strong color and well defined grills, gutter margin into stamps at bottom, creases affecting three horizontal rows, crimped vertical perfs through center, hinge reinforcements mainly on creased stamps and some nicks in the lower right margin, otherwise Fine, a truly remarkable intact sheet of 100 of the 2¢ F. Grill and only known complete sheet of any Blackjack issue, ex Metzger.

There where two intact sheets of the Blackjack issue. The second sheet, which resided in the Allen collection, was never recovered after the collection was stolen. It is now presumed to have been broken up.

(Used from Hawaii) 1863, 2¢ black. Applied at San Francisco and canceled by target handstamp with matching "San Francisco, Cal., Feb 18" cds tying on 1864, 3¢ pink entire to South Glen Falls, N.Y., in combination with manuscript canceled Hawaii 1864-66, 2¢ rose vermilion + 5¢ blue (Sc. #31+32) tied by target handstamps, red "Honolulu, U.S. Postage Paid, Jan 22" cds; cover with a few small edge tears not mentioned on certificate, Very Fine, a remarkable fifth sub-period usage with 2¢ Blackjack added to paid the 2¢ ship fee, the only cover recorded with this Blackjack usage; with 2001 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 73+U58    Estimate $10,000 - 15,000.

This cover was carried aboard the Hesperian, leaving Honolulu on January 23, 1867 and arriving on February 15 in San Francisco. The 2¢ Blackjack was applied to make 3¢ postage plus 2¢ ship fee, however this fee was already paid by the 2¢ Hawaiian stamp.

Neatly tied by full strike of fancy Devil & Pitchfork in circle handstamp on fresh unsealed cover to Windsor, Ct., with "West Meridan, Conn., Aug 29" cds alongside, Extremely Fine, a magnificent strike and the finest of the three known examples of the West Meriden, Conn. Devil & Pitchfork postmark tying a 2¢ Blackjack on cover; with 1981 P.F. certificate.

In vermilion, bottom margin plate "No. 50" block of 8 with "National Bank Note Company" imprint, full o.g., beautiful rich color and sharp detailed early impression, few perf separations between top right pair, fresh and Fine, a remarkable and unique 2¢ Blackjack specimen plate block from the rare "No. 50" plate; with 2009 P.F. certificate.

Showing wide horizontally laid lines, straight line "Paid" and cork cancels, centered to upper right, strong color, two small tears which do not detract, Fine appearance, an immensely rare 1863, 2¢ Blackjack issue on horizontally laid paper, this being one of three known examples, one of which is on vertically laid paper and all having some degree of faults; with 1986 P.F. certificate.

Express, Horintas" oval handstamp, manuscript "Sept 11, 66" docketing at left, Extremely Fine, a wonderful an unique Wells, Fargo & Co. express usage; with 1996 P.F. certificate.

Pa., Post Office, May 23, '64" cds on cover with blue allover illustrated Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and Hospital, Philadelphia scene design, with view of buildings, soldiers and civilians and railcars, addressed locally, Extremely Fine, a very rare use of the 2¢ Black Jack on this magnificent allover lithographic design, pictured in Kantor, ex Haas; with 2009 P.F. certificate.

(Turkey) 1863, 2¢ black. In combination with 1861, 3¢ rose, two singles + 10¢ green, horizontal pair on cover to Constantinople, Turkey, all tied by fancy geometric grid cancels, red "N. York Br. Pkt., 7 Paid, Feb 6" exchange cds and blue boxed Aachen transit date stamp with matching instructional box handstamp, reverse with Vienna transit and Austrian office receiving backstamps; 10¢ pair with small unnoticeable faults and cover with small piece above 10¢ pair neatly patched, Very Fine and attractive, a striking combination paying the 34¢ Prussian closed mail rate to Constantinople, ex Rorke (where this cover sold for $11,000 + 10% buyers premium in 1988); with 2009 P.F. certificate.

1867, 2¢ black, Z. Grill. Block of 4, magenta target cancellations, natural s.e. at right, typical centering amid wide margins, clear well defined grills, strong bold color, vertical creasing in right stamps and two small tears on top left stamp, Fine appearance, a great rarity and the largest known multiple of the 2¢ Blackjack, Z. Grill of which only a few are known, this being one of the most attractive examples, Scott listed but unpriced for a used block of four; with photocopy of 1980 P.F. certificate.

Accompanied by a 1989 letter from the Philatelic Foundation regarding this block "It is unique as to being a 2¢ Z grill block mint or used, according to our record of submissions since our inception in 1945. Furthermore, we have no record of any other multiple approaching this block either in size or format.".
