(Incoming) Cleveland, O./Apr. 28. Red circular datestamp on 1850 folded letter to Sacramento City Cal. with bold "40" rate, few light cover stains, Very Fine and scarce, reputed to be one of two recorded examples of this rate marking struck in black.

(Incoming) Northampton, Mass./Dec. 12. Red cds with red "40" rate on stampless cover to San Francisco, California, accompanied by a similar cover but with manuscript "40", minor edge wrinkles, Very Fine and rare, a very nice pair.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

(Incoming) California 40¢ Rates, 1849-51. 11 folded letters or covers including Independence, Missouri (datelined "Little Blue") to Sacramento, Boston to "North Fork American River, Beals Bar" with pencil "1.60" that is likely an express company marking, New York state manuscript postmark to San Francisco and re-rated by the San Francisco Post Office from "10" to "40" in magenta manuscript, Missouri manuscript postmark to Stockton with "Advertised" blue oval handstamp and "4" red pencil fee marking, other origins include Cincinnati and College Hill, Ohio, and other destinations include Culloma and Sutter's Fort, Very Fine overall, the Stockton advertised cover illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 330).

(El Dorado) Culloma, Alta Cal./28 May/40. Rare integral rate postmark in red (Williams ELD-420) on 1850 buff cover to Massachusetts with matching "Paid" in arc, tiny cover tear at bottom, Very Fine and choice, rare with handstamp paid, ex-Newton, Nathan.

Lot 125    

(El Dorado) Culloma, Alta Cal./June 3. Postmark in red (Williams ELD-410) on blue 1851 folded letter to Auburn, Cal. with matching "12½" rate marking in red, manuscript notation "Missent", however there is no indication as to where it was missent, letter regarding the schedule of the Court, two light vertical file folds (one through cds), Very Fine, very scarce with rate outside of postmark, ex-Newton.
Estimate    $300 - 400.
