Lot 251    

(Nevada) Centerville, Cal. /8 January 1852. Manuscript postmark on cover to Salem City, Oregon Terr. with manuscript "10" rate and perfect strike of "Peckham's Hotel/Centerville/Grass-Valley, Cal." oval handstamp, Extremely Fine and choice, undoubtedly the finest strike of this, the only 19th century California Hotel forwarder handstamp, indicating "to the mails" service.

"Beatty House/Centerville,/Grass Valley,/Nevada County, California.". fancy printed corner card used as postmark with manuscript "Aug. 30" date alongside and "10" rate at right on buff cover to Massachusetts, right side with cover wrinkle, Very Fine, a wonderful rarity showing the corner card used as Post Office mark of origin, included is a photo of an ex-Knapp cover with similar usage from the Beatty House & different type of corner card.

(Nevada) Grass Valley, Cal., Collection Balance. 13 covers or folded letters, all but one 1850's, with both Centerville and Grass Valley manuscript postmarks, first on 1852 folded miner's letter with 1851 3¢ pair and second on stampless cover rated both Paid 6 and 10, other uses with cds postmarks include two stampless Paid 6 (one with the 6 struck twice so evidently double rate), one stampless Paid 10, one stampless Free (James W. Denver correspondence), one with 1851 3¢ pair and one with 1851 10¢, one with 1857 10¢ tied and forwarded prepaid in Massachusetts with 1857 3¢ tied, and an 1853-55 10¢ Nesbitt entire, Very Fine overall.

Eight covers including two with manuscript postmarks, first Nevada City 40 and second Nevada Paid 6, three other stampless covers with Paid 3 integral rate postmarks with one changed to Paid 6 and another changed to Paid 10, cover with 1851 3¢ tied by Paid 3 integral rate postmark, and a cover with 1857 3¢ tied plus an 1853-55 10¢ Nesbitt entire, F.-V.F. group, the Nevada City manuscript 40 and the stampless Paid 3 illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (pages 49 and 53).
