(San Joaquin) Burwood, Cal./Feb. 22. Manuscript postmark ties 1861 3¢ rose on small ladies' cover to Vermont, Very Fine.

Lot 319    

(San Joaquin) Knight's Ferry, California. Straight line postmark with "28 Mch" manuscript date on cover to Irasburgh, Vermont franked with 1851 3¢ dull red pair (slightly cut in, lifted & hinged back to cover) with pen cancels, where forwarded prepaid to Northfield, Vermont, with blue "Irasburgh, Vt." cds and matching blue "Paid 3" in circle handstamped rate marking, "1856" pencil docket, tear at top affecting the postmark date, edge wear and light stain at right, top backflap mostly missing, Fine.

Lot 320    

(San Joaquin) Liberty, Cal./Apr. 12/'61. Manuscript postmark on embossed ladies' cover to Sacramento franked with manuscript cancelled 1857 3¢ dull red, Very Fine.

Liberty was established in 1852 by C.C. Fugitt. First know as Davis Crossing, then Fugitts, the town finally became known as Liberty in 1859. Liberty was an important stage route between Stockton and Sacramento. The end of the town came as a result of the Central Pacific Railroad establishing Galt as a stop.

(San Joaquin) Lockeford Cal. 1864, June 22. Manuscript postmark on cover to North Bridgewater, Massachusetts franked with 1861 3¢ rose with pen cancels, slightly reduced at left, Very Fine.

Lot 322    

(San Joaquin) MacDermotts Bridge, Cal./Aug. 13. Triple-lined oval postmark with manuscript date on 1853-55 10¢ Nesbitt entire to Franklin, New Hampshire, large closed tear at upper left and small corner nick at upper right, backflap partly missing, F.-V.F., a superb strike of one of the rarest California postmarks, ex-Myerson, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 314).

(San Joaquin) Staples Ranch, Cal./Dec. 14. Manuscript postmark on buff cover to New Hampshire franked with manuscript cancelled horiz. pair of 1851 3¢ dull red, pair tied by San Francisco cds in transit with San Francisco Due 10 cds alongside as this must have been a double rate cover, Very Fine.

(San Joaquin) Staples Ranch, Cal./Jan. 2. Cds ties 1857 10¢ green, type II horiz. pair on 1860 cover to New Hampshire, included is original enclosure which mentions Yosemite Falls, the Annual County Fair and new abundance of fruits and vegetables, plus a most interesting reference to the Transcontinental railroad & Pony Express, If the Pacific railroad was built how easily we might supply the hungry in Kansas with bread. We have a Pony Express which carries letters and telegraph dispatches from here to the Atlantic States so that we can now get news from the far west almost as soon as you can it has come through in seven days, Very Fine.

Lot 326    

(San Joaquin) Stockton, Cal./May 23. Blue balloon cds on unpaid 1853 stampless folded letter to Cobourg, Canada West, blue United States exchange handstamp with blue handstamped "15" (cents) rate (both in a darker shade of blue than the postmark), also black handstamped "9" (pence) Canadian rate, transit and receiving postmarks on the back, letter is from a farmer to his father, short edge tears at left just affecting the Stockton postmark, also a bit soiled, Fine, early cross border mail from California, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 238).
