Lot 438    

California Balance, Domestic Incoming Uses. Over 70 1850's and 1860's covers and folded letters, about half to San Francisco and the rest to other California towns (several forwarded in California), all from the 6¢ and 10¢ transcontinental rate periods, about one third stampless paid or unpaid and the rest stamped with 1851-61 Issues frankings (including some double and higher rates, also several underpaid so Due 4 or Due 7), various eastern and mid-western origins including numerous small towns (a dozen manuscript postmarks noted), several covers with overland mail endorsements (with two overland mail covers sent from Missouri at the 3¢ rate plus an overland mail illustrated stagecoach envelope with Stockton imprint used from New York), Very Fine overall, an impressive collection of the "letters from home" that were so cherished by the Argonauts and pioneers.

California Balance, Foreign Incoming Uses. 29 19th-century covers and folded letters to San Francisco or other California towns (a couple forwarded in California), majority 1850's and 1860's, one third stamped and the rest stampless paid or unpaid, various European and American origins (Austria, England, Scotland, France, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Canada, Russia, Switzerland, Chile, Peru, etc.), many interesting postal markings, Very Fine overall.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

California Covers, 1851-1925. Interesting assortment of 100 or so covers, many towns large & small, much from Monterey County, as well as other, note Angel Island, Del Monte, San Juan, Hollister, blue Marysville "Paid with Stamps" on 10¢ Nesbitt entire; very few San Francisco or other common towns; condition somewhat mixed, worth a close look (no photo).

California Covers, 1851-1955. Carton of perhaps 1,000 covers, a wealth of towns, advertising, dozens of real photo postcards, corner cards, and much much more; this accumulation needs to be organized and mined for surprises, some mixed condition, please examine (no photo).

California Maritime Balance. Nine items including an 1853 cover (front only) franked with 1851 3¢ pair tied by "New York/Ship" cds with "Stmr. Sierra Nevada / Via Nicaragua / Advance Of The Mails" blue oval handstamp, an 1854 folded letter (to Boston with "Care Penny Post" endorsement) with "Noisy Carrier's Mail" handstamp and San Francisco postmark, an 1853-55 6¢ Nesbitt entire also with "Noisy Carrier's Mail" handstamp and San Francisco postmark, an S.S. Constitution "From San Francisco" Cabin ticket dated 1863, an 1873 stampless cover to San Francisco with "Panama Transit" handstamp, a circa 1860 cover from New York to Washington, D.C., with "United States Mail Steamship Company" embossed corner card, two 1850's stampless covers from Mexico to New York City, the first with "per Steamer Texas" (from Vera Cruz) endorsement and Mexico City postage paid (to Vera Cruz) handstamps and New Orleans postmark and "Steamship 10" rate marking and the second (front only) with "U.S. Consulate Acapulco" handstamp and New York "Steamship" postmark and "40" rate marking, and an 1856 stampless cover from Jamaica to Ohio with "George Law Via New York" endorsement and Kingston "Paid" postmark and "Steamship 10" rate marking, F.-V.F.

Lot 443    

California Maritime Balance, 1848-51. Seven items including four folded letter address leafs carried privately to Boston, three to shipping merchants William Appleton & Co. by the Ship Barnstable and Steamers Panama and Oregon with dockets indicating origins of San Diego in 1848 and San Francisco in 1849 and 1850 and the fourth to shipping merchants Thatcher Magoun & Son "pr California Apl 1 1850" from San Francisco, plus an 1848 printed circular for San Francisco commission merchants Ward & Smith to New York City where delivered by Boyd's City Express, an 1850 cover to Rochester, New York, with "per Steamer California" San Francisco endorsement and mailed with "New York / 7 Aug / 10cts" red postmark, and finally an 1851 folded letter from Valparaiso, Chile, to San Francisco "Pr. Amn. Str. Independence to Panama", forwarded by Smith & Lewis from Panama to San Francisco on the S.S. Northerner, and mailed in San Francisco with boxed "30" red Panama rate handstamp, Very Fine group.

Mix of 100 covers and cards; nice range of towns with some scarce items; including 1860's Wilmington (Los Angeles), San Diego county including Decanso 4-color franking registered, 1888 San Diego boxed date stamp, 1887 El Cajon, 1895 La Panza manuscript (San Luis Obispo), 3 Bennetville cover (Mono), 1888 Manchester (Mendocino), Calaveras including Mosquito Gulch & Copperopolis cds's, 1879 Mountain House on Wells, Fargo & Co. frank entire (Sierra), 1870 Union manuscript (Merced), 1850-60's Knight's Ferry postmarks, 1896 Santa Rosa carnival cover, some postcards including real-photo, etc. (no photo).

"80" & "160" manuscript rates, franked covers including interesting overland, 6 incoming usages and a telegraph cover; condition varies, generally Fine or better.
