Confederacy, Goodson, Va./Sep. 10. Black cds with matching circled "10" rating hs on cover to Gonzales, Tex., endorsed "Forwarded by E. Keyser Qr.Master, 1st Detachment, 1st Regt., Texas Volunteers, C.S. Infantry…/61"; reduced at right and some small edge tears, Fine.

Confederacy, Gravel Hill, Va./Nov. 2/'62. Manuscript postmark on folded cover to Richmond, some wear, Fine, from brother to brother (both in 57th Va Regt.) and both survived Pickett's charge (no photo).

Manuscript postmark and matching "Paid 10" rating on cover to Lynchburg, Va., postmarked "Lynchburg, Va./May 28" cds on front and straightline "Advertised" handstamp, manuscript notation on reverse "opened through mistake" and 2nd strike of Lynchburg cds; cover lightly cleaned and some restored edge wear, Very Fine appearance.

Blue cds with matching "10" rating handstamp (Dietz IIA) for double rate on all-over Greenlee Davidson Attorney advertising cover addressed to Greenlee Davidson in care of Gov. Fletcher at Richmond Va., manuscript. "Paid Ch. Box 33", small cover flaws and partial flap, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Greenlee was killed at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863 as Captain of the Letcher Battery.

Confederacy, Suffolk, Va., Nov 18. Cds with matching "5" rating handstamp on cover to Charleston S.C., endorsed "from P. Force, C.L.J.V., 1st Regt. S.C.V.", he was promoted from 4th Sergeant on Jan. 1, 1864 and killed at Spottsylvania on May 12, 1864; cover tear, otherwise Very Fine.

Confederacy, Richmond, Va./Feb. 27 [1864]. Cds on Les Miserables, Jean Valjean, 174 pages plus separated cover, 5?" x 9"'; postmarked on title page; small bit of front cover and entire back cover missing, minor evidence of smoke damage (no odor) on last page, otherwise Fine, Quite Rare paying the rate for Small Books by Subscription - 2¢ per ounce:, Ex-Green & Cipolla.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

The fact that the postmark was placed inside the front cover would indicate that the book was sent at the prepaid subscription rate. For a monthly publication, the rate was 2½¢ per quarter for the first ounce plus 2½¢ for each additional ounce, for a total of 10¢ for this 4 oz. book. Since this was not likely a monthly publication, the rate would have been 2¢ per ounce for a total of 8¢ prepaid.

Confederacy, Richmond, Va./Oct. 17, 1861. Cds (Powell type IIa) with straight line "Paid" handstamp (Dietz Type III) & manuscript "Pd. 5cts." at top right on local cover, once the cover was recognized as a drop usage it was struck with correct "Paid 2" (Dietz Type I) rate handstamp, flap torn, Very Fine, ex-Thayer.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.
