United States 1861 3¢ rose (slight stains) tied by target cancel with "Columbus, O./Jul. 16" (1863) double circle postmark on cover to Lorrenty Store, West Virginia (West Virginia became a state on June 20, 1863), manuscript censor's "Examd E.L. Webber Maj Comdg Post" endorsement; slight cover wrinkles, F.-V.F.

Poten" endorsement; slightly reduced at left, Very Fine, ex-Gallagher.

Poten/Camp Chase" circular censor's marking (Harrison Type Ia), minor corner wear, n4, F.-V.F., this is the the earliest recorded example of this type of Censor's marking.

Confederacy, Camp Douglas, Chicago, Ill. Visitor's pass issued to Private Byron G. Smith dated July 24th, 1862 and signed by Maj. G. P. Smith as Regimental Commander, reverse with "Headquarters, Camp Douglas, Joseph H. Tucker, Col. Commanding" hs; light creases, Very Fine.

Lot 700

Confederacy, Carroll Prison (Old Capital Prison), Washington, D.C. ALS written by Confederate Governor of Virginia John Letcher and datelined "Carroll Prison, June 29, 1865", manuscript examiner's initials marking at top, he mentions "I am here without knowing the reason of my arrest, nor have I the least knowledge of the time when I shall be discharged…"; accompanied by carte-de-viste of Governor Letcher, Very Fine.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Following the surrender at Appomattox, the Confederate Governor of Virginia, John Letcher was placed in prison. Carroll Prison was part of the Old Capital Prison, and consisted of a row of homes adjoining Old Capital Prison.
