Lot 2277

Samoa, Apia, Dec 1st/99. Dateline on letter from postmaster J. Davis to Dr. Woodward regarding stamps and local fighting…I find I am at fault respecting the stamps at the time I received your order for stamps. We had trouble, the Samoans fighting in the streets, the War Ships firing over the houses, quite a tenuous (sic) time, but hope you will excuse me. I send along the later stamps and a few over.; mounting stain on backsheet, otherwise Very Fine.

Samoa, 1886, 1d Green, Perf 12½. In combination with 1890, 2d brown orange, perf 12x11½ on cover to Washington, D.C., canceled by two strikes of circular waffle grid cancel, in conjunction with U.S. 1888, 5¢ indigo (perf at right overlapping portion of the Palm Tree cancels) and tied by a similar yet different waffle grid cancel, reverse with red "San Francisco, Paid All, Aug 4" transit cds and receiving postmark, Very Fine, an unusual combination usage with the Palm Tree issue not canceled by the usual Apia town postmark(Odenweller 15). Scott No. U.S. 216.

Samoa, 1886, 1d Yellow Green, Perf 12½. In combination with 1886, 2d orange, perf 12½ on fresh 1888 cover to San Francisco, tied by blue "Apia, Samoa, Oct 9" cds, in conjunction with U.S. 1888, 5¢ indigo slightly overlapping cover and tied by waffle grid cancel, red "San Francisco, Paid All, Oct 27" arrival cds and receiving backstamps; cover with minor edge nick at lower left, Very Fine and attractive, a lovely early combination cover (Odenweller 16). Scott No. U.S. 216.

Samoa, 1886, 2d Dull Orange + 4d Blue, Perf 12½. 2d separated slightly into stamp at top, both tied by blue "Apia, Samoa, Oct 11" type 2 cds on cover to the San Francisco Post Office addressed in the hand of Postmaster Davis; some minor tone spots, F.-V.F., believed to be an 1887 usage as the 6d stamps where not issued until late September of 1887 (Odenweller 278). Scott No. 13+16.
