Samoa, 1890-92, ½d Purple Brown, Perf 12x11½. Top margin gutter block of 8, full o.g., showing patched horizontal mixed rotary and line double perfs between stamps, light crease in selvage, Very Fine.
SG No. 41    Estimate $100 - 150.

The older rotary perf machine on occasion had been used to correct some of the dramatically mis-perfed sheets made from the new line perf machine.

Samoa, 1890-92, ½d Purple Brown + 2d Dull Orange, Perf 12x11½. Canceled by dark blue "Apia, Samoa, Feb 4" cds on registered cover to Chicago, Ill., manuscript "From Chas. Dietz, U.S.S. Iroquois" endorsement at left, manuscript "8" crossed out with 6 alongside for prepaying registry fee, reverse with purple "San Francisco, Cal., Registered, Feb 18, 1892" cds (seldom seen on covers from Samoa) and Chicago receiver, Very Fine, an unusual early Palm Tree issue registry usage (Odenweller 49).

In combination with 1890, 2d orange, perf 12x11½ on 1891 cover to Colombo, Ceylon, tied by neat blue "Apia, Samoa, Jan 21" cds, in conjunction with U.S. 1890, 5¢ chocolate tied by waffle grid cancel, reverse with San Francisco, New York, London and Brindisi transit postmarks, "Colombo, Mr 22, 91" receiving backstamp; 1d with a few toned perfs and cover corner nick at bottom left, still Very Fine, a very rare commercial usage and destination (Odenweller 40). Tied by dark blue "Apia, Samoa, Dec 31" cds's on 1890 printed matter rate cover to St. Helena, Cal., in conjunction with U.S. 1890, 1¢ dull blue (Sc. 219) tied by segmented cork cancel, cover clipped at sides to insure the printed mater rate; cover edge tears and some toning, F.-V.F., a rare printed mater rate usage (Odenweller unlisted).
