Samoa, On Active Service Only, Cop 5th Regiment, 6th Platoon, B Company, Samoa, Via Suva. Endorsement on multicolored German Samoa Yachet Issue post card to Wellington, New Zealand, with indistinct Apia postmark on front of card and blue "Prohibited." straight line handstamp on front and reverse, with message…It is just a week since we landed in Samoa…, with matching mint post card, Very Fine, an interesting occupational interim usage.
Estimate    $75 - 100.

Use of stamp reproductions was prohibited and this card was duly given a prohibited handstamp, but apparently was delivered.

Lot 2422    

Samoa, Apia "No Stamps Available", 1914. Group of 3 covers and front all with Apia cds (S15); two sent on Sept. 5th - legal size cover to San Francisco with typewritten "Stamps Not Available", other to Auckland, N.Z. with "On Active Service" endorsement (cover tear), Sept. 21 local usage franked with New Zealand 1d carmine pair tied by postmark and "No Samoan Postage Stamps available" endorsement, wood cover front locally sent on Sept. 9th, accompanied by two postmark cuts with no stamps endorsement (one handstamp endorsement), F.-V.F., a scarce group.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The first ordinance issued by the Postal Authorities of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces dated Aug 29, 1914 was as follows; "The German stamps in mark and pfenning values are from this day on out of issue. Letters with the remark 'No stamps available' are accepted until the issue of intermediate stamps".

Samoa, 1914 G.R.I. Surcharge Issues. Approximately 150 mint and used stamps arranged on pages in binder;½d on 3pf issues with mint and used including multiples on piece, Auckland and Sydney transit marks, variety including no fraction bar issues, similar ½d on 5pf issues including hyphen bar and shifted surcharge varieties, 2½d on 20pf with split surcharge in strip of three, shades, no fraction bar variety in mint and used blocks and on cover usage, 3d on 25pf with paper variety, 6d on 50pf with inverted "9" for "6" variety in used strip of three, also a section of forged including double and inverted surcharges, F.-V.F. overall, an attractive assembly of these scarce occupational issues.

In combination with 1914, G.R.I. ½d on German Samoa 5pf green on cover to Auckland, New Zealand with "On His Majesty's Service" imprint at top, tied by "Apia, 22 9 914" cds with second strike alongside, purple circular censor handstamp and receiving backstamp; right portion of reverse missing, otherwise Very Fine. Defects, tied by "Apia 11.9.14" cds on legal size cover to Sydney, N.S.W., manuscript "Via Pago Pago" routing endorsement and red crayon "Passed by Censor, N.Z.E.F." examiner marking, reverse with Sydney receiving machine postmark, Very Fine appearance, a very early usage; with 1978 B.P.A. certificate. Scott No. 102.

It is reported that the first usages of the G.R.I. overprint stamps where used on September 9th.
