Samoa, 1900-70's American Samoa Covers. Well in excess of over 100 pre-1940's covers and cards displayed on album and stockpages, with late 1900 Pago Pago covers, later 1900's including illustrated Oceanic Steamship Co. corner card cover to Honolulu, 1903 "S.S. Sonoma" cover, 1910-11 U.S.S. Annapolis covers, 1915 Pago Pago registered covers franked with Parcel Post issues and a New Zealand overprint issue combination mailed from Pago Pago, 1928 Pago Pago machine postmark canceling Hawaii 1898, 2¢ brown with straight line ship marking tying, 1920-30's incoming and dues usages, Tonga tin can mail via Pago Pago, includes a selection of used U.S. Wash-Frank and 4th Bureau issues mostly in blocks, section of 1932-42 Leone, Tutuila postmark covers, several hundred later covers including F.A.'s & Prexie issue usages including commercial censor material, 1960 cacheted covers from the various American P.O.'s, section of off cover precancels, etc., F.-V.F., an excellent foundation for an American Samoa collection.

Samoa, Pago Pago, Samoa, Dec 9, 1900. Bold sharp cds tying U.S., 4¢ Trans-Miss on cover to Malden, Mass, transit and receiving backstamps, Very Fine and attractive.

Samoa, U.S.S. Annapolis, Dec 12, 1910. Clear strike of four bar postmark on cover to San Francisco, manuscript "From, Chap. H.M.T. Pearce, Tutuila, Samoa" endorsement, Very Fine, an early and scarce U.S. naval ship usage from Tutuila, Samoa.
Estimate    $75 - 100.

The Annapolis departed San Francisco, Cal. on 5 April 5th bound for American Samoa. The gunboat arrived at Tutuila, Samoa on May 22nd and began duty as station ship. She discharged those duties until September 1911, when she departed Pago Pago to return home. The gunboat was decommissioned once more on December 16, 1911.

Samoa, 1925-40 U.S.S. Ship Covers. Over 100 covers and card on album and stock pages in binder; an array of usages including early 1925 "U.S.S. Seattle, Pago Pago, Samoa" and "U.S.S. John Francis Burnes." postmarks, later including usages from the U.S.S. Arctic, Astoria, Avocet, Brooks, Cachalot, Lark, Bushnell, Maury, Medusa, cacheted covers from the U.S.S, Submarine Arogonaut, and many others, Very Fine.

Samoa, U.S. Naval Station, Tutuila, Nov 8th, 1927. Dateline on customs label for Samaon Curios, affixed on parcel wrapper piece, franked with U.S. 1922-25, 1¢ green + 7¢ black + 50¢ lilac, strip of three (552, 559, 570) tied by Pago, Pago, Samoa roller cancels, accompanied by second 1920 label with blue customs cachet handstamp and portion of insured handstamp, F.-V.F.

Samoa, 1930-70 Airmail Covers. Selection of approximately 70 covers; includes 1938 cover and Pan-American Airways card mailed at Apia to New Zealand with purple "Service Did Not Eventuate" two-line handstamp (letters where to connect with the first Clipper flight Honolulu-New Zealand, these covers where held at the Apia post office for two and a half years, cover with August 1940 receiver), as well as an array of cover from the 1937 first fight, other flights including 1956 F.A.M. 14, 1930 U.S. 5¢ Winged Globe first day from Pago Pago, signed 1966 experimental Samoa-Wallis Futuna Island & 1967 Samoa-Wallis Gilbert & Ellis Island flight covers (includes label sheets), etc., Very Fine.

Purple straight line cachet handstamp on a selection of seven 1931 usages; includes double signature (Tokelau & McMullin) registered cover with "Pago Pago, Aug 12" postmark, four with J.E. Jennings signature (owner of island) including one posted in Apia and post card usage with bisected 2¢ WashingtonNo one cent stamps here, two other with Paul T. Diefenderfer signatures, one to Honolulu, Very Fine overall, an exception assembly of this very scarce covers.

Naval postmark two covers with purple "First Flight Air Mail, American Samoa" box cachet handstamp and straight line "Via Air Mail" handstamp, "Pago, Pago, Samoa, May 16, 1931" cds tying U.S. 5¢ Airmail on cover to District Governor of Tau, Manu'a and other tying U.S. 2¢ + 3¢ definitives on cover to Supt. of Education, includes commemorative folder, photo of plane taking off from the U.S. Chicago and a photocopy of the ships transcript for that day, Very Fine, only 150 covers flown.

Samoa, 1942-45 Marine and Naval Covers. A wonderful collection of approximately 100 covers arranged on album and stock pages; including Marine Corps Unit #465 cover with "U.S. Navy, Jun 8, 1942" postmark with "US P P O, Straw Area" bar cancel ("Straw" was secret code for Samoan Defence Area, use in postal cancel violated security), an array of defence battalion usages mostly from 1942-43, section of "Seventh Defence Bat. Fleet Mar. Force, Remember Wake Island" cancels, Second Defence Brigade mail, section of patriotic covers, 1943 V-Mail message from Upolu, later material including 1944 A.P.O. last day postmark, etc., F.-V.F., an attractive collection for the specialist.
