(Mail Routes) By the Overland Mail Stage Via Los Angeles! Hurrah! But We Must Have the (Railroad). Striking pictorial design by "Hutchings & Rosenfield" showing Pioneers Waving To a Passing Train on cover to Peru, New York, franked with 1857 10¢ green type V (corner fault) tied by "Brooklyn, Cal, Jan 10" cds, reduced at right, Fine, a very design.

Lot 1126    

(Mail Routes) OVERLAND. straight line sans-serif handstamp on cover to Chester, Pa., with matching "Sacramento City, Cal. Nov 11, 1859" cds tying 1857, 10¢ green type III, manuscript docket at left; stamp with small nick at bottom and small cover tear at top, otherwise Very Fine, only six examples of his handstamp of Sacramento are recorded, ex Knapp, Risvold.
Scott No. 33    Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

The Sacramento post office used this handstamp between August 24, 1859 and January 3, 1860. It is believed that this marking was used to indicate that it was received too late at Sacramento to catch the overland mail departure from San Francisco, which left San Francisco on this date, and that the cover was to go overland on the next trip departing November 14th rather than by steamer.

(Mail Routes) OVERLAND. Black straight line handstamp (San Francisco type 1 with small "R") used in transit on cover posted from Nevada City, Cal. on April 4, 1860 on cover to Canada, manuscript "Paid 15" rate, "Raglan May 5 1860" arrival backstamp; Very Fine, the southern overland mail left San Francisco on April 9th carrying 4,835 letters.

(Mail Routes) Overland Via Los Angeles. perfect of red oval handstamp at upper left on rebacked cover front to Triangle, New York, franked with 1857 10¢ green, type V cancelled by segmented grid with very clear strike of "Camtonville, Cal./Apr 24, 1860" cds, Extremely Fine appearance, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 248)., ex-Knapp, Jessup.

Perfect sitrike of blue rectangle handstamp on cover, beautifully addressed to South Boston, Massachusetts, franked with 1851 3¢ dull red pair (plated as 73-74L3, mostly large margins) tied in transit by "New-York/ Sep 9" cds, Extremely Fine and choice, a stunning cover in superb condition; ex-Wiltsee and Haas; with 1981 P.F. certificate.

Via Nicaragua/Ahead of the Mails. Two line handstamp crisply struck in blue on "San Francisco, May 31st, 1853" folded printed circular listing prices current from importers "Geo. N. Shaw & Co." who are also known as forwarders of letters, to Boston with "Via Nicaragua" endorsement, franked with 1851 1¢ blue type IV (large margins to just shaving at the bottom) cancelled by grid, Extremely Fine and choice, A Phenomenal 1851 Issue and Ocean Mail Exhibition Item That Is Ex-Knapp, Polland, Haas, and Grunin; with 1987 P.F. certificate.

Co's Steamer Brother Jonathan of May 10th '54" sender's endorsement at bottom left, postmarked "New-York, Jun 9" cds in transit on the indicium, Very Fine and choice a very rare marking in red.
