(Gahagan & Howe) City G & H Express. Blue double-lined oval handstamp with "423 Washn. St. S.E. Cor. Sansome St." address struck twice on stampless cover to a woman "North Side Francisco" in San Francisco, Very Fine and attractive, a gorgeous example of this short lived company which delivered mail locally in San Francisco, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 69).

Greenhood & Newbauer Northern Express. Printed frank on three 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entires, all Fretz and Ralston correspondence to San Francisco, each with the indicium cancelled by Greenhood & Newbauer Express/Weaverville, Cal. double-lined oval handstamp in blue (one with second strike at lower left plus month and day date in pencil, other two with month and day dates in pen), Extremely Fine, a lovely group of covers.

Greenhood & Newbauer Northern Express. Printed frank with "Newbaner" spelling error on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco, struck with "Greenhood & Newbauer Express/Weaverville, Cal." double-lined oval handstamp in black and "26" day date in pencil on the indicium, transferred to Wells, Fargo & Co. with blue "Wells Fargo/Sac. City" double oval transit handstamp at lower left plus perfect strike on the back (both dated Mar. 29), reduced at right, F.-V.F.

Lot 1165    

Gregory & English's Moore's Flat and Eureka Express. Typeset frank with ornate border and "Connecting with Wells, Fargo & Co., at Nevada City, Cal" text on 1864 3¢ pink entire to North San Juan, transferred to Wells, Fargo & Co. with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co./Nevada /Mar. 20" oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 11-9) confirms the connection between the companies, trifle reduced at left, Very Fine, a very rare Express Usage and the first one of its type we have ever offered, ex-Toaspern and Jarrett.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

According to Nathan this express was operated briefly by J. R. English and a partner named Gregory, its franks are extremely rare.

Lot 1166    

J. W. Gregory Esqre./Express Office. Address on stampless cover intended for "Mr. or Mrs. George Liddell" in San Francisco, probably of eastern origin, "Not Paid" straight line handstamp at left (with the "D" touched up in ink matching that of the address), small corner stain, Very Fine, an interesting usage, one of the least seen of all of the Gregory's Express markings.

Gregory's Atlantic and Pacific Express/San Francisco. Red four line handstamp incorporating "Central Office, 280 Montgomery Street" address plus matching "Not Paid" red oval handstamp on stampless folded letter to Sacramento City, letter with business content is headed "San Francisco May 10, 1851" and quotes several prices current, Very Fine, ex-Clifford.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Lot 1168    

Hall & Allen's Express/Dutch Flat. A wonderful strike of this rare Express Company oval handstamp on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire with Wells Fargo printed frank, to Alameda so carried by Hall & Allen's Express from the mines and transferred to Wells Fargo from Dutch Flat to San Francisco where exchanged with "J. Bamber & Co. Contra-Costa Express/San Francisco" black oval handstamp and scarce Bamber "Collect 12½ Cts" black diamond rate marking, "1858" docket on the back, short tear above the indicium and a trifle reduced at right, Extremely Fine with all markings clearly struck, ex-Haas, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 194).
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

Lot 1169    

Haven + Cos Express and "Free to N.Y.". Red brown manuscript endorsement on 1850 stampless folded cover from San Francisco to Philadelphia, entered the mails in New York with "New York, 11 Feb, 5cts" red integral rate cds, Very Fine, one of the very few recorded covers from this Express Company, ex-Vogel, Haas and "Edwards", illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 194).

Lot 1170    

Hawley & Co.'s Express. Black shield handstamp clearly struck beneath "Paid" black straight line handstamp on stampless folded letter to Sacramento City, letter is headed "San Francisco Oct. 15/'50", Very Fine and choice, a lovely example of this rare marking, ex-Barkhausen and "Edwards", Cover illustrated in Nathan's Franks of Western Expresses (page 103).
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

This short lived company operated from 1849 to 1850 only, about a month after this letter was sent, the company was bought by J.M. Freeman, and became Freeman's Express.
