Official Seal - Registry, 1872, green. Top sheet margin pane of 15, without gum, bold color, pencil "From Geo. H. Worthington Sale, on "Buy Bid"" notation in upper right margin by George Grinnell, reinforced perfs with some separation, small repaired margin nick at bottom left, otherwise Very Fine, a lovely and rare pane, one of four top panes recorded, ex Worthington.

George Grinnell, well known for his "find" of Hawaiian Missionary stamps, formed one of the first comprehensive collections of official seals. This pane is one of two known bearing notations by Grinnell.

Official Seal - Registry, 1872, green. Group of 14 used singles with a variety of cancellations including Conway Mass. "barrel", "Plainfield, N.J." straightline, negative "M", "Registry", some in color; also includes OXF1a mint and used singles, and OXF1b imperf used single; few small faults, a F.-V.F. group, many illustrated and discussed in Kotanchik.

Lot 1551    

Official Seal - Registry, 1872, green. Cancelled by "New-York Jun 12" cds and affixed at left on yellow cover to Corning N.Y., bearing 3¢ green (158) tied by grid cancel duplexed with same matching "New-York N.Y. Jun 12" cds, "G. W. Brown" signature at left as typical when an envelope was opened in error; reduced a bit at left, Fine, a unique registry seal used to repair an envelope, ex-Gottlieb, Albert.

The registry seal was apparently used to reclose this letter, which was opened in error by the N.Y. post office. The seal and stamp have matching circular datestamps dating from the early 1870s.

Official Seal - Registry, 1872, green. Three registered package usages each mounted on exhibit page comprising 1873 Morgan envelope from Portland Me., Feb. 1 Nesbitt envelope with Barber signature from Woodstock Vt. with red cds (only recorded example), and Jan. 3 Postage Stamp Agency envelope with Terrell signature from New York City; a Very Fine group.

Official Seal - Registry, 1872, green, imperf pair. Vertical pair, large part original gum, small nick in right margin and light vertical crease, Fine appearance, an exceptionally rare variety, ex-Christiansen, Richardson.

According to Kotanchik (p. 30) this pair's origin is a mystery as it does not plate to either the regular issue top and bottom panes of 15 or the Special Printing pane of nine, illustrated in Kotanchik (p. 30).

Official Seal - Registry, 1872, green, printed on both sides, back inverted. Top Sheet Margin Pane of 15, full o.g. with some adherence affecting only three stamps, well centered throughout, fresh with strong bold color, reverse with light yet discernible second impression, two stamps with small pin rust stain and a few minor perf separations, otherwise Very Fine, the Only Recorded Full Pane of the 1872 Registry Seal Issue Printed on Both Sides Variety and one of the four known top panes recorded, a remarkable and unique exhibition item, ex Cunliffe.

Official Seal - Registry, 1875 Special Printing, bluish green. Complete sheet of 30, without gum as issued, strong bright color, attractive overall centering, light horizontal crease in third row of seals, missing portions of selvage at lower left and top right and reinforced perf separations in mostly in bottom margin, otherwise F.-V.F., a truly remarkable Post Office Seal Rarity - The Unique Complete Sheet of the Continental Bank Note Co. 1875 Official Seal Special Printing and one of the most important post office seal items in existence, pictured in Kotanchik Post Office Seals of the United States and Possessions (page 36), ex E.H.R. Green, Grinnell, Wampler.

In addition to this pane, only seven single seals have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation.
