Ephemera Balance. 12 items; includes 7 checks/drafts including 1890 check signed by Adolph Sutro, 1850 Savage Mining Co from Virginia, Nev., 1870's with check from Columbia with 2¢ Revenue, 1869 second of exchange draft with federal & state revenue issues, 4 package receipts including early 1849 New York Wells & Co. receipt, 1888 illustrated Mariposa collection envelope, etc., F.-V.F. or better.

Wells Fargo & Co. Company, Express & Exchange. Olive illustrated allover shaded ad design showing express building scene, on yellow cover to New York City, Wells, Fargo & Co. "Collect" in oval handstamp struck twice with "McIntire's City Express Post" oval handstamp around one collect handstamp, Extremely Fine, a magnificent Wells, Fargo & Co. express and McIntire's City Express local post combination.

Wells Fargo & Co. Idaho Expresses. Lot of 18 Wells Fargo covers, franks include all five types of the 1862-64 Salmon River & Nez Perces Express printed surcharges (50¢ and 75¢ rates, one with Lewiston company handstamp, another with 1862 Florence City miner's letter) plus three examples of the 1864 Boise Mines red printed frank (50¢ rate, two with Bannock City and one with Centerville company handstamps), regular franks include 1860's and 1870's uses from five different towns (Bannock City, Boise City, Idaho City, Lewiston, and Ruby City), also a cover with unlisted South Mountain company handstamp "struck from the original cancel picked up at Silver City Idaho 1946" (no original covers are known) and a Wells Fargo conjunctive use with D.C. Patterson & Co's Boise & Salt Lake City Express, several covers with faults or are fronts only, three covers neatly repaired, V.G.-Fine, ex-Mader.

Wells, Fargo & Co. Express/Portland. Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 3-1) on 1855 10¢ Nesbitt entire (on white) with red "Atlantic Express" printed frank, to New Hampshire, entered the mails with New York cds with year date (probably 1860), minor edge fault at bottom and small piece of bottom backflap missing, Very Fine, a rare Wells Fargo transcontinental use from Oregon, ex-Mader.

Wells Fargo & Co. Express, Sacramento. Blue oval handstamp on 1852 folded letter addressed to California pioneer Samuel Brannan in San Francisco; light file fold affecting mark, otherwise Extremely Fine.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Samuel Brannan was an American settler, businessman, and journalist, who founded the "California Star" newspaper in San Francisco, California. He is considered the first publicist of the California gold rush and was its first millionaire. He is also credited with starting the California gold rush by traveling to San Francisco, waving above his head a bottle filled with gold dust, and boisterously proclaiming that gold had been discovered on the American River. Under the influence of gold fever, Brannan went on to renounce his affiliation with the Mormon Church.
