Letters NE, full even margins, tied by red Maltese cross cancel on 1d Mulready envelope addressed to Suffolk, reverse with partial Wollpit cds; small part of backflap missing from wax seal removal and central file fold not affecting stamp, otherwise Very Fine; with 1984 P.F. certificate. Scott No. 1.

Great Britain, 1878 Lord Beaconsfield (Benj. Disraeli) ALS. Bold autographed letter signed "Beaconsfield" while prime minister and datelined "10, Downing Street, Whitehall", on black bordered notepaper; dated "May 13, 78"; carte-de-visite accompanies captioned "Earl of Beaconsfield, K.G."; letter with fold, photo with corner faults, still Very Fine.

Lot 1983    

Great Britain, 1884, 2½d lilac. Tied by "London, Nov 25, 1886" Ethridge Machine Postmark on cover to France; small cover tone spots, a Very Fine strike, very rare. Scott No. 101.
SG No. 190    Estimate $500 - 750.

The American Postal Machines Company of Boston, Massachusetts, furnished the British Post Office in London with one of their "Ethridge" steam-powered postmarking machines for testing in 1886. The Post Office rejected the machine because of its size, its high cost and little or no advantage compared to Hoster Machines being concurrently tested.
