Samoa, 1898, Handstamped Surcharge, 2½d on 1s dull rose carmine, horizontal pair. In combination with 1895, 1d green, vertical pair on cover to Lyon, France, tied by "Apia, Samoa, Dec 28, 98" cds's, manuscript via San Francisco endorsement, with "N-Z Marine P.O." and receiving backstamps; portion of address panel obliterated (Monsieur l'Abbe Hervier), otherwise Very Fine, a rare combination (Odenweller 810).

In combination with 1895, 1½d on 2d orange, blue surcharge, vertical pair + 1890, ½d purple brown, vertical pair + 1d green on double rate registered cover to San Francisco, all tied by blue "Apia, Samoa, Apr 18, 95" cds's, in conjunction with U.S. 1893, 8¢ Columbian tied by neat San Francisco oval handstamp, red "Registered, May 9, 1895, San Francisco, Cal." straight line date stamp and reverse with manuscript "PM, Apia, Samoa" postmaster notation, Extremely Fine, an attractive and choice combination usage (Odenweller 132). Samoa, 1926, "Samoa." on New Zealand 5s Postal Fiscal, Overprint at Top. Cowan paper, bottom margin single, tied on piece by neat town cancel, bright color, faintly toned perfs at bottom, Fine, a very rare overprint error variety with only 20 examples believed to exist, this being one of the few in used condition, S.G. unpriced in used condition; with 2011 B.P.A. certificate. SG No. 166ba.
