Red cds and matching straight line "Ship" handstamp with manuscript "12½" rate, on 1806 French blockade folded letter from Liverpool, England to Philadelphia, Pa., commercial letter mentions falling prices and…A singular decree has been issued by the Emperor of France dated Berlin, 21 Nov. by which the 'British Islands are declared to be in a state of blockade', Very Fine.

1701 South Carolina To London, England. Folded letter from Edward Hyne to his brother-in-law in London, manuscript "pr Capt. Martin, Q.D.C." endorsement at lower left and "4" rate, partial letter with "Janye 19th, 1701" docketing, letter mentions the buy and owning of Negro slaves, mentions getting his family on the next ship out from England to him before the war breaks out (War of the Spanish Succession), Very Fine, a very early transatlantic letter from South Carolina.

1776 Arthur Middleton Letter. Folded letter sheet addressed to "William Henry Drayton Esq., Chief Justice of South Carolina" with "p favor of W. Weereat of Georgia, Q.D.C." endorsement and docketed "Arthur Middleton's Letter & his opinion about Lee's expedition to E. Florida, 14th & 18th Sept, 1776" docketing at right; some cover aging, Very Fine appearance.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Henry Middleton was a leader of the American Party in Carolina and one of the boldest members of the Council of Safety and its Secret Committee. In 1776, Arthur was elected to succeed his father in the Continental Congress and subsequently was a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence. Also in 1776, he and William Henry Drayton designed the Great Seal of South Carolina. Despite the time he spent in England, his attitude toward Loyalists was said to be ruthless. During the American Revolutionary War, Arthur served in the defense of Charleston. After the city's fall to the British in 1780, he was sent as a prisoner of war to St. Augustine, Florida (along with Edward Rutledge), until exchanged in July the following year.

Charleston Sept. 1. Straight line postmark on 1794 folded letter sheet to the Port of Newport, Rhode Island, with manuscript "250" rate; light toning along file fold at left, otherwise Very Fine, an unusual multiple rate usage.

(South Carolina) Charleston April 29. Bold straightline date stamp on folded cover to Boston with black manuscript "25" rate, addressed to Thos. & John Hancock, Boston, docketed 1796; couple filefolds do not detract, Very Fine and attractive, ex. Welch.
