Culloma, Alta Cal., Dec 12 (El Dorado). Bold postmark (Williams ELD-410) on blue 1850 folded letter from Virginia with manuscript "Harpers Mills, Va." manuscript postmark & matching "10" rate, incorrectly rated & bold "40" rate in circle applied in New York, upon arrival the cover was forwarded to San Jose with magenta manuscript "Fwd 12½" & totalled for 52½¢ due, light aging at edges & faint trace of owner's handstamp at bottom left, Very Fine, a wonderful exhibition item and a very rare Culloma postmark in black, Pictured in Coburn's Letters of Gold.

Nevada City, Cal., 24 April (Yuba). Manuscript postmark (Williams YUB-1090) on fresh 1850 cover to Windsor, Vt., Extremely Fine, only a few known during the early Yuba county period.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Sent on the P.M.S.C. - Panama departing San Francisco on May 1st and arriving in Panama on May 21st, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Georgia departing Chagres May 26th and arriving in New York on June 9th.

Placerville, Cal., Apr 6 (El Dorado). Full red cds (Williams ELD-2920) with matching straight line "Paid" and "40" rate handstamps on cover to Columbia, Missouri, Very Fine, an extremely scarce California "40" rate usage from Placerville, ex Pearce.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Sent on the P.M.S.C. - Panama departing San Francisco on April 15th and arriving in Panama on May 2st, then by U.S.M.S.C. - El Dorado departing Chagres May 7th and arriving in New York on May 17th.

Sacramento, Sep 1 (Sacramento). Manuscript postmark (Williams SAC-2460) and "Paid 40" rate on 1849 folded letter to Yellow Springs, Iowa, letter datelined "California, Sutters Mills, August 19th '49" and lengthy four page letter regarding trip to California, with details of gold mining the American river and sending correspondences, "write direct to California Sacramento City (Sutters)", Extremely Fine, one of the earliest usage of the Sacramento manuscript postmark, ex Straley.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

Lot 12    

Sacramento, Cal., Oct 28, 1849 (Sacramento). Two line postmark (Williams SAC-2470) on stampless folded letter sheet with small matching "Paid 40" rate handstamp, to High Creek, Mo., partial red Paris, Mo., Jan 26 cds; cover wear and light soiling, Fine, still a wonderful strike of this very rare first handstamp postmark of Sacramento.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

This Sacramento straight line postmark was only in use for 20 days between October 21 and November 10 of 1849.

Sacramento, Cal., 40, Nov 1 (Sacramento). Bold sharp strike of integral rate oval date stamp (Williams SAC-2480) on folded letter datelined "Feather River in camp, Oct 7th, 1849", addressed to Tecumset, Mich., lengthy 3-page letter with interesting content regarding mining in the region, Extremely Fine and choice, one of two examples of the Integral 40 Rate Oval Sacramento Postmark and the only one residing in private hands, the other which resides in the Wiltsee collection.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

Sacramento, Cal., Nov 25 (Sacramento). Oval postmark (Williams SAC-2480) with matching large "40" rate handstamp alongside, on 1849 folded letter to Dorchester, Massachusetts, letter datelined "California Gold Mines, November 20th, 1849", Very Fine, the earliest known usage of the large "40" rate handstamp.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Sacramento, Cal., Mar 20 (Sacramento). Bold oval date stamp (Williams SAC-2480) on folded letter to Goshen, Pa., red crayon "40" rate, lengthy 3 page letter datelined "Union Bar, North Fork of American River, Feby 27th, 1850" with interesting content regarding hardship of miner's life…Hundreds have fell victim to an untimely grave by exposure in this country, mentions visiting Salmon Falls, additional small enclosed note to his mother - excusing the shortness of such…for fear of making double postage and inquiring about letter sent from Valparaiso; some cover edge wear, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Sent via P.M.S.C. - California departing San Francisco on April 1st and arriving in Panama on April 23th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Georgia departing Chagres on April 29th and arriving in New York on May 7th.

Sacramento, Cal., 40, May 28 (Sacramento). Bold integral rate cds (Williams SAC-2490) on folded letter to Brooklyn, Ct., letter datelined "Sacramento City, May 14th, 1850" regarding the forwarding of an enclosed letter, Extremely Fine.

Sent via P.M.S.C. - Oregon departing San Francisco on June 1st and arriving in Panama on June 21st, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Georgia departing Chagres on June 26th and arriving in New York on July 8th.

San Francisco, Cal., July 2 (San Francisco). Bold straight line postmark (Williams SAF-230) with magenta manuscript date and matching "40" rate marking on 1849 folded cover to New Jersey, manuscript notation "per Steamer Oregon", important California business letter which mentions pre-fabricated houses, Extremely Fine, one of the finest strikes of San Francisco first handstamp postmark, used on only three sailing dates of June 20, July 2 and August 1 of 1849., ex Jessup & Pearce.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Sent on the P.M.S.C. - Oregon departing San Francisco on July 2nd and arriving in Panama on July 21st, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Falcon departing Chagres on July 28th and arriving in New York on August 17th.
