Clear strike of cds (Williams SAF-260) on fresh 1849 cover to Portland, Me., manuscript "40" rate in red crayon and manuscript "Per Steamer California" endorsement at top; trivial wax seal stain at center, Very Fine, a wonderful First Day Usage of the First San Francisco Circular Datestamp, pictured in Wiltsee Gold Rush Steamers of the Pacific (pg. 374), ex Pearce.

Sent via P.M.S.C. - California departing San Francisco on August 1st and arriving in Panama on Aug 24th, then by Empire City Line - Empire City departing Chagres on September 1st and arriving in New York on September 13th.
