Bold red integral rate cds (Williams SAF-250) on folded letter to New York City, interesting merchant letter datelined "Stockton, April 24th, 1850" regarding letters in Sacramento…We understand that a large number of letters &c. were consumed at the late fire in that city; file folds, otherwise Extremely Fine.

Lot 30    

San Francisco, Cal., 40, May 15 (San Francisco). Red integral rate cds (Williams SAF-290) on 1850 folded letter to Keokuk, Iowa, manuscript "S.B. Isthmus" steamship endorsement, interesting letter from new arrival in San Francisco…I have just arrived in this wonderful land yesterday 51 days from Panama in a sailing craft, Very Fine, a Rare First Sailing of the Law's Line Non-Contract Steamer Isthmus, ex Vogel.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Although the Pacific Mail Steamship Company had an exclusive government contract to carry the mails, Law offered the San Francisco postmaster the use his ships to convey mail. On May 14, 1850 the postmaster agreed only on condition that the sender's had to indicate carriage by Law's steamers. This agreement was a breech on the government contract and was eventually terminated after five months.

Sent on the first sailing of Law's Line - Isthmus departing San Francisco on May 15th and arriving in Panama on June 16th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Georgia departing Chagres on June 26th and arriving in New York on July 8th.

San Francisco, Cal., 40, June 1 (San Francisco). Full sharp strike of red integral rate cds (Williams SAF-290) on folded letter to Taunton, Mass., letter datelined "San Francisco 30th May, 1850" with interesting content…I am now in command of the steamer Major Tompkins on the Sacramento riverWe make our first trip tomorrow, Extremely Fine and choice, the earliest known usage of this San Francisco integral rate postmark, pictured in Wiltsee Gold Rush Steamers of the Pacific (pg. 380).
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Sent via P.M.S.C. - Oregon departing San Francisco on June 1st and arriving in Panama on June 21st, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Georgia departing Chagres on June 26th and arriving in New York on July 8th.

Red integral rate cds (Williams SAF-300) on cover front to Boston, Mass., matching straight line "Paid" handstamp and "40" rate handstamp applied over "80" integral rate, with original enclosure from San Francisco postmaster J.B. Moore regarding helping women coming California to teach school, Very Fine, postmark one month earlier than the earliest listed in Williams.

Bold red integral rate cds (Williams SAF-290) on 1850 folded letter sheet to Boston, Mass., manuscript "per Steamer Columbus" endorsement at bottom left, Extremely Fine, a scarce usage carried on the Law's Line non-contract steamer Columbus, ex Pearce.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Sent on Law's Line - Columbus departing San Francisco on June 18th and arriving in Panama on July 6th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Falcon departing Chagres on July 12th and arriving in Havana on July 19th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Ohio departing Havana on July 19th and arriving in New York on July 24th.

San Francisco, Cal., Jul 1 (San Francisco). Red cds (Williams SAF-280) with matching "40" rate handstamp on 1850 folded letter to Boston, Mass., with additional red straight line "Too Late" handstamp applied at San Francisco post office, forwarded to Long Meadow, Mass. with cds and rate crossed out and red "Boston, 5cts, Aug 27" cds applied, Very Fine, a rare usage of the "Too Late" handstamp from San Francisco, ex Pearce.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Missing the July 1st sailing of the P.M.S.C. - California, this cover was sent on the P.M.S.C. - Tennessee departing San Francisco on July 15th and arriving in Panama on August 4th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Falcon departing Chagres on August 12th and arriving in Havana on August 16th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Ohio departing Havana on August 19th and arriving in New York on August 24th.

San Francisco, Cal., Aug 15 (San Francisco). Red cds (Williams SAF-280) on 1850 folded letter sheet to London, England, manuscript "pr steamer Carolina" and "via New York to England" endorsements, manuscript "2/5½" due, Liverpool transit and receiving backstamps, Very Fine, a very scarce 59¢ California rate usage to England.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Sent on the P.M.S.C. - Carolina departing San Francisco on August 15th and arriving in Panama on September 4th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Falcon departing Chagres on September 12 and arriving in Havana on September 17th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Ohio departing Havana on September 18th and arriving in New York on September 22nd. Place aboard Cunard Line - Asia departing New York on September 25th and crossing the Atlantic Ocean in record time (10 days & 7 hours) arriving in Liverpool on October 5th.
