San Francisco, Cal., 40, Sep 17 (San Francisco). Clear strike of integral rate cds (Williams SAF-290) on 1850 folded letter sheet to Boston, Mass., red straight line "Per Stmr Isthmus" steamer endorsement with same in manuscript at lower left, Very Fine, a scarce usage carried on the Law's Line non-contract steamer Isthmus.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Sent on Law's Line - Isthmus departing San Francisco on September 17th and arriving in Panama on October 10th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Georgia departing Chagres on October 26th and arriving in New York on November 7th.

Lot 39    

San Francisco, Cal., Nov 1 (San Francisco). Red cds (Williams SAF-280) on 1850 folded letter sheet to London, England, matching straight line "Paid" and the rare "59" rate handstamp, red "19" credit handstamp applied at New York and red London receiving date stamp; file folds, otherwise Very Fine, a rare pre-paid usage of the 59¢ California rate usage to England.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Sent on the P.M.S.C. - Panama departing San Francisco on November 1 and arriving in Panama on November 19th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Georgia departing Chagres on November 26 and arriving in New York on December 7th. Sent to Boston and place aboard Cunard Line - Europa departing on December 11th and arriving in Liverpool on Dec 21st.

San Francisco, Cal., 40, Dec 1 (San Francisco). Red integral rate cds (Williams SAF-290) on 1850 folded letter to Boston, Mass., manuscript "per mail steamer Oregon" endorsement; lightly soiled file folds, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Sent on the P.M.S.C. - steamer Oregon departing San Francisco on December 1st and arriving in Panama on December 20th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Georgia departing Chagres on December 26th and arriving in New York on January 6th.

San Francisco, Jan 1 (San Francisco). Red cds missing "Cal." at bottom (Williams unlisted) on 1851 cover to New York City, matching "Paid" and "40" rate handstamps, manuscript "Carolina, Dec 24, 1850" endorsement at top; cover with light toning and edge wear, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Sent on the P.M.S.C. - steamer Carolina departing San Francisco on January 1st and arriving in Panama on January 19th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Georgia departing Chagres on January 28th and arriving in New York on February 8th.

San Francisco, Cal., Mar 16 (San Francisco). Bold cds (Williams SAF-350) on 1851 cover to the postmaster in Sterling, Mass., manuscript "40" rate in red crayon; trivial corner wear, Very Fine, likely the earliest example of this postmark which predates the earliest in Williams by 4 months, ex White, Pearce.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Sent on the P.M.S.C. - Northerner departing San Francisco on March 16th and arriving in Panama on April 1st, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Falcon departing Chagres April 13th and arriving in Havana on April 17th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Ohio departing Havana on April 18th and arriving in New York on April 24th.

San Francisco, Cal., May 31 (San Francisco). Red cds (Williams SAF-280) with matching straight line "Paid" and "40" rate handstamps on cover to Providence, R.I., "pr Steamer Tennessee" ship endorsement, Very Fine.

Sent on the P.M.S.C. - Tennessee departing San Francisco on May 31st and arriving in Panama on June 19th, then by U.S.M.S.C. - El Dorado departing Chagres June 26th and arriving in New York on July 6th.

San Francisco, Jun 17 (San Francisco). Red cds missing "Cal." (unlisted postmark type in Williams) with matching "12 ½" rate handstamp on 1851 folded cover the Governor in San Jose, cover forwarded to new state capital in Vallejo with red San Jose cds (Williams SCL-2680) & manuscript "For'd 12 ½", totalled with manuscript "25" due, Very Fine, pictured in Coburn's Letters of Gold, ex Pearce.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Stockton, Cala., Dec 19th, 1849 (San Joaquin). Red manuscript postmark (SAJ-2290) with matching "40" rate on folded letter to Steuben, Me., Very Fine, a rare early manuscript postmark from Stockton, ex Haas.

Sent on the P.M.S.C. - Oregon departing San Francisco on January 1st and arriving in Panama on January 21st, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Falcon January 12th and arriving in Havana on February 1st, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Ohio departing Havana on February 2nd and arriving in New York on February 9th.
