Steamship, 10, Jan 27" cds due the addressee; file fold creasing left stamp, F.-V.F.

Folded "Le Ballon Poste, No. 10 - 4 Decembre 1870" journal franked with France 1867, 30c brown + 1870, 40c orange tied by dotted star cancels paying the 7 decimes per 10 grams via G.B. rate (January 1, 1870 to June 30, 1871), red London transit with "2 Cents" credit handstamp and New York entry cds; 30c with small corner nick at bottom left, otherwise Very Fine, a rare Ballon Monte Usage to the United States, Sent on the Balloon Ville De Paris.

The rate was 1.2 francs per 10 grams via G.B. (July 1, 1871 to July 31, 1874). Either 40 centimes was paid in cash or this was processed at the previous 70 centimes per one third ounce rate. Cover franked with France 1870, 10c bister, three singles + 1871, 25c blue, vertical pair tied by dotted star cancels overpaying the 5 decimes per 10 grams rate via direct mail to the U.S. (July 1, 1871 - July 31, 1874), several strikes of "Boston Am. Pkt., 10, Oct 12" entry cds; slight soiling and stamp flaws from cover overlap, F.-V.F., cover insufficiently franked for service via G.B. and was held for direct rate resulting in overpayment.

1874 Gagny, France To New York, N.Y. Unpaid cover with "Fr/2f " tombstone per 30 grams bulk rate marking applied in Paris, handstamped "14" cents G.B. debit to the U.S. (10¢ French and 4¢ for British inland and sea). 2¢ U.S. inland was added, resulting in 16¢ due, with a depreciated currency marking of 18¢ due the addressee. Black handstamped "New York Post Office Advertised May 15" and "Cannot Be Found" on the front, "New York Jun 16" transit cds on the reverse and blue "Dead Letter Office U.S. Jun 17 1874" cds on the reverse; cover filing holes, Very Fine.

Sent via Cunard Line - per steamer Algeria, departing Liverpool on April 21st, Queenstown on April 22nd and arriving in New York on May 3rd.

1874 Havre, France To New York, N.Y. Unpair folded letter with "Fr/2f" tombstone handstamp per 30 grams bulk rate marking applied in Paris, handstamped rocking horse G.B. debit of "26 cents" to the U.S. applied in London for a letter weighing between 10 grams and a half ounce (double 10¢ French and 4¢ British inland and sea, plus 2¢ probably in error). 2¢ U.S. inland added to the debit resulting in 28¢ due in coin, or 31¢ in notes as noted by the "New York, Feb 27" depreciated currency cds., Very Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

Sent via Cunard Line - per steamer Cuba, departing Liverpool on February 14th, Queenstown on February 15th and arriving in New York on February 27th.
