1847 New Orleans, La, To Bordeaux, France. Folded letter sheet with blue "New Orleans, La., Sep 5" origin cds and matching straight line "Paid" and "10" rate handstamp for a half ounce in the over 300 miles postal zone, "25" decimes due the addressee in France (10 decimes due G.B., 15 decimes for 7.5 - 10 grams over 600 kilometers), F.-V.F., originally requested Hérout & de Handel steamer New York but evidently arrived too late for this sailing.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Sent via Cunard Line - per the steamer Caledonia, departing Boston on September 16th and arriving in Liverpool on September 29th.

Lot 361    

1847 New York, N.Y. To Cognac, France. Folded letter with "18" decimes charged the addressee in France (10 decimes sea and 8 decimes inland for a letter weighing up to 7.5 grams), however, the black manuscript "W" upper right corner represents 10 grams in weight, probably marked in Paris,and the rate should have twice what was collected, blue rare "Le Havre, 1 Paq., Dec 12, 47" entry cds, Very Fine, a very scarce letter taken to steamship's letter bag, bypassing New York post office, also carried on the last voyage of the New York.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Sent via Hérout & de Handel Line - per steamer New York, departing New York on November 25th and arriving in Havre on December 12th.

1849 New York, N.Y. To Cognac, France. Folded letter with pencil "24" rate per half ounce applied in New York, "18" decimes due the addressee in France (10 decimes due G.B., 8 decimes for 7.5 grams over 400 kilometers), Very Fine, according to R. Winter Understanding Transatlantic Mail, Vol. 1 very little mail for France was carried by the Ocean Line steamer during the first few years of their operations.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Sent via Ocean Line - per steamer Hermann, departing New York on April 20th and arriving in Southampton on May 4th.

Lot 363    

1849 New York, N.Y. To Cognac, France. Folded letter with paid to Boston at bottom left, with absence any U.S. postal markings, this was probably hand carried to Boston and placed in ships bag, manuscript "19" decimes due the addressee in France (10 decimes owed G.B., plus 9 decimes French internal), Very Fine, the restored rate period with only three west bound sailings during this period.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Sent via Cunard Line - per steamer America, departing Boston on January 24th and arriving at Liverpool on February 4th.

1850 San Francisco, Cal. (Pre-Statehood - 2-Feb-1848 - 8-Sep-1850) To Bordeaux, France. Folded letter with red "San Francisco, Cal., Jun 1" cds and matching straight line "Paid" with manuscript "56" rate (40¢ transcontinental + 16¢ sea) with "15" decimes due handstamp in France (10 decimes owed G.B. plus 5 decimes internal for a 7.5 grams letter), on 1-Aug-1849, France initiated a standard 5 decimes per 7.5 grams inland rate, replacing the previous kilometer based system in effect from 1843, Very Fine, a very uncommon pre-statehood usage.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Sent via Pacific Mail Steamship Co. - per the steamer Oregon, departing San Francisco on June 1st and arriving in Panama on June 21st. Then placed on the United States Mail Steamship Co. - per steamer Georgia, departing Chagres on June 26th arriving in New York on July 8th, then on the Ocean Line - per steamer Washington, departing New York July 21st and arriving in Southampton on August 4th.

1853 Havana, Cuba To Bordeaux, France Via New York. Printed prices current sheet with bright red oval "Forwarded by Renauld & Francois New York" oval forwarder handstamp on reverse, red Le Havre cds and manuscript "15" centimes per 40 grams due the addressee, receiving, Very Fine, ex Noel.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Cover carried via Ocean Line - Steamer Washington, departing New York on October 8th and arriving in Southampton on October 21st.

1853 New Orleans, La. To Paris, France. Folded letter with partial red "New Orleans, La., Apr 4" cds and matching "Paid 5" handstamp for rate per half ounce via British Open Mail, straight line "British Packet" handstamp (known used Aug-1852 - Apr-1853), Very Fine, the "British Packet" handstamp was probably applied in Boston with significance unknown. Pkt., Feb 9" exchange cds and pencil "21" rate (5 cents U.S. inland + 16 cents sea), 13 decimes (not shown) collected in France; few minor age spots, Very Fine, a scarce second retaliatory rate period usage (January 24 to February 10, 1853).
