Folded letter datelined from Harrisburg, Pa., entered the mails with red "Philadelphia, Pa., Oct 31" cds, matching boxed "Paid" handstamp and blue manuscript "12½" for inland rate to New York, red Le Havre transit cds and red crayon "38" due, Very Fine.

(Vanderlinden 2554, scarcity 6) and "America, Uber Bremen" handstamps, reverse with "Bremen 23/9" transit cds, Very Fine, ex Boettger.

(Outgoing Philadelphia) 1849-66 Philadelphia, Pa. To France. 5 folded letters prepaid to N.Y. sent by British contract steamship via G.B.; 1849 to Cognac and 1850 to Paris with red "Colonies &c. Art. 13" boxed handstamps, 1853 to Lyon with red "Philada., 5cts Paid" boxed handstamp and "26" decimes due for double rate, 1856 to Cognac with "8" handstamp crossed out and re-rated 13 in manuscript, and 1866 to Staifa, Switzerland with "F./3"0 French debit and "110" rappen due in red crayon; few small flaws, otherwise Very Fine.

(Outgoing Philadelphia) 1852 Philadelphia, Pa. To Wurttemberg, Germany. Folded letter sheet with blue "Philadelphia Pa., Oct 29" cds and matching "20" rate handstamp, "N. York Am. Pkt., 23, Oct 30" cds, manuscript "47" kreuzer due, "Steamer Baltic" endorsement, reverse with red Aachen & Frankfurt transit cds's, Very Fine, this a match for the earliest recorded eastbound Prussian Closed Mail (see pg. 924-25, APS Journal 9/84, Allan Radin).
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

The sender intended this letter to go by the Bremen mail at the 20¢ rate. Since the letter was unpaid and a week early for the Bremen steamer, the clerk in New York sent this letter by Prussian closed mail.

(Outgoing Philadelphia) 1852 Philadelphia, Pa. To Bremen, Germany. Folded letter sheet with blue "Philadelphia, Pa., Nov 5" cds and red "Phila. 5cts Paid" octagon handstamp with manuscript "20" over handstamp rate, straight line "Paid Part" handstamp and reverse with red "New York, Nov 5" cds; small cover tear at top, still Very Fine and choice, a scarce uprating of the Philadelphia octagon rate handstamp.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

The "Paid Part" handstamp is a New York marking indicating that the letter was prepaid only to Bremen. Nothing was due since delivery was at this port. Sent per Ocean Line - Washington, departing New York on January 31, 1853 and arrived on Bremen on February 16th.
