(Incoming) Anvers, Belgium To San Francisco, Cal. Folded letter sheet franked with Belgium 1865, 40c rose + 1fr dark violet tied by "12" dotted lozenge cancels paying the Belgium closed mail rate, matching "Anvers, Nov 1, 66" origin cds, red "N. York Br. Pkt., Paid, Nov 14" exchange cds and manuscript "20" credit to the U.S., reverse with transit cds and "Br. Packet" straight line handstamp, Very Fine, a scarce example of the 1fr dark violet shade on cover; with 1977 J. Baete certificate.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Sent via Cunard Line - Persia departing Liverpool on November 11th, at Queenstown on November 4th and arriving at New York on November 14th. Then sent overland to San Francisco.

Folded letter datelined "Cobija a small town in Bolivia, Sept 29, 1866" with blue "Lamar, Franca" circular handstamp, blue manuscript "24" rate for British mails and "Panama Transit, 3 De 1866" straight line date stamp, bold "San Francisco, Cal., Jan 24" cds and matching "34" rate handstamp, Very Fine, a rare incoming usage from a small town in Bolivia.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

(Incoming) Gravenhage, Netherlands To San Francisco, Cal. 1855 cover with "to the care of the Agent of the Penny Post Company" directive, "Gravenhage, 29/1, 1856" origin date stamp and manuscript "105" cents paid rate on reverse, 85 cents credited to G.B. with manuscript "1/5", red "Paid, 31 Ja, 1856" British transit cds, Extremely Fine, ex Cole.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Sent via R.M.S.P. - Tyne departing Southampton on February 2nd and arriving in St, Thomas on February 21st, then on R.M.S.P. - Teviot departing St. Thomas on February 21st and arriving in Colon on February 26th, then on P.M.S.C. - Golden Age departing Panama on March 1st and arriving in San Francisco on March 14th.

(Incoming) Guayaquil, Ecuador To San Francisco, Cal. 1851 folded letter with "20" due handstamp applied in San Francisco and reverse with bold oval "Forwarded By, Zachrisson, Nelson & Co., Panama" forwarder handstamp, Very Fine.

Sent via P.M.S.C. - Columbus departing Panama on August 2nd and arriving in San Francisco on August 20th.

(Incoming) London, England To San Francisco, Cal. 1864 folded letter sheet with blue London, Fe 4, 64 origin cds on reverse and "19 cents" debit handstamp, endorsed "South America" (for steamer La Plata leaving for St. Thomas on February 2nd) with "Too Late, G.P.O." circle handstamp, "San Francisco, Cal., Mar 19, 1864" receiving cds and matching "24" due handstamp; minor faint staining, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

Sent via Cunard Line - Africa departing Liverpool on February 6th arriving in Boston on February 21st, then by the central overland mail route to San Francisco.

Sent via Cunard Line - China departing Liverpool on May 13th arriving in Boston on May 26th, then by the central overland mail route to San Francisco.

Folded letter datelined New York 26th April 1851 with manuscript "pr Steamer Prometheus" ship endorsement and Berford & Co.'s Express red "Paid" handstamp, reverse with clear full strike of red "Forwarded Through Gilpin's Exchange, Reading Room and Foreign Letter Office, N-York" oval handstamp, "Rec'd per Isthmus June 7/51" pencil inside docketing, Extremely Fine, a wonderful express usage sent on Vanderbilt's Independent Line, pictured in Coburn's Letters of Gold (pg. 92).
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Sent on Vanderbilt's Line - Prometheus departing New York on April 28th and arriving in Charges on May 5th, then by P.M.S.C. - Isthmus departing Panama on may 20th and arriving in San Francisco on June 7th.

(Incoming) New York, N.Y. To San Francisco, Cal. 1855 cover franked with 1851, 3¢ dull red, two singles tied by "New York, Dec 12" cds and "New York, Dec 20" ocean mail grid cds, Very Fine.

Sent on the U.S.M.S.C. - North Star departing New York on December 20th and arriving in Aspinwall on December 28th, then by P.M.S.C. - John L. Stephens departing Panama on January 1st and arriving in San Francisco on January 13th.

Lot 54    

(Incoming) New York, N.Y. To San Francisco, Cal. Folded letter datelined "New York, March 6th, 54" addressed to the captain of the steamer Cortez (Nicaragua Steamship Co.), handed to the route agent in New York and when it reached San Francisco it received the "Way" in oval handstamp and manuscript "11" rate (10¢ unpaid rate plus 1¢ way fee), Very Fine, an extremely rare San Francisco "Way 11" rate usage, ex Kramer.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Sent on the U.S.M.S.C. - Ohio departing New York on March 6th and arriving in Aspinwall on March 18th, then by P.M.S.C. - John L. Stephens departing Panama on March 19th and arriving in San Francisco on April 2nd. The captain of the N.S.C. - Cortez left San Francisco on March 16th and returned on April 16th.

Lot 55    

(Incoming) New York, N.Y. To San Francisco, Cal. Cover with red "Atlantic & Pacific Steam Ship Co., D.R. Allen Agent, New York" oval handstamp, bold "San Francisco, Cal., Oct 24, 1860" cds and matching "10" rate handstamp, Extremely Fine and rare, an early usage on the non-contact Atlantic & Pacific Steam Ship Co. line, ex Pearce.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Cornelius Vanderbilt founded the Atlantic and Pacific Steamship Company to compete with the Pacific Mail Steamship company and the United States Mail Steamship Co. on the Panama route between San Francisco and New York. The Atlantic and Pacific operated Aspinwall to New York portion of the route.
