1917, 2¢ lake, type I. Top margin vertical block of 20, original gum mounted on piece of album page, showing very unusual color transition from the carmine at top to the "Boston" lake at bottom; this NOT due to any toning; contains 10-12 distinct examples of the shade in this block, very dramatic and possibly unique.

It is worth noting that this came from an old-time Boston collection hidden away for decades.

1917, 2¢ deep rose, type Ia, light unobtrusive machine cancel, near perfect centering amid large beautifully balanced margins, rich bright color, an Extremely Fine to Superb gem, a truly remarkable example of this scarce stamp, this being one of two examples to obtain this lofty grade with none higher; with 1988 P.F. certificate and 2004 P.S.E. Graded certificate (XF-Sup 95J, SMQ $1,050 for 95).
